Willard Schmidt was the key guy the Cards gave up. In the season just ended, Schmidt ptiched 4 innings in relief to beat the Phillies on August 2 and go into first place over the Milwaukee Braves, raising his record to 10-1. The Cards trailed off as did Schmidt and finished 8 games back.

Ted Wieand pitched in 1 game for the Reds, going 2 innings and giving up a 2-run homer. He finished his MLB career with a 9.00 ERA, and a SO/BB ration of infinity (2 Ks, 0 BBs).

Taylor hit .304 in his only time with the Cards. But he only had 23 ABs, mostly as a pinch-hitter before getting placed on waivers and picked up by the Browns Orioles.

Marty Kutyna pitched three seasons as a mediocre middle reliever first with the Kansas City A's then the Washington Senators.

Then there's this Curt Flood guy . . .

I posted this trade yesterday and some thought since it was so long ago it was funny. Willard Schmidt, yes, he was key in the grade and wore a great number 44.

ON THIS DAY... December 10, 1981 - The Cardinals and Padres traded shortstops when Garry Templeton goes to San Diego along with outfielder Sixto Lezcano as Ozzie Smith and right-hander Steve Mura head for St. Louis. The trade, however, will not be finalized until Smith's salary with his new club is determined by an outside arbitrator two months later.
