I’ll reserve total judgment until the final numbers are known, but for a team with a tight budget, and in desperate need of innings, it seems pretty risky to sign a guy who has been so injury prone. Maybe Bill already has the insurance policy in hand to help pay the contract when May injures himself again. Let’s hope he stays away from the salad bar.
May does have a high upside, but the odds of him ever realizing that has not been very good up til now.

Have you ever actually seen May pitch when healthy???
“Embarrassing”????
Seriously?????
I have not. But I can read stats just like you and his stats are worse than Mikolas. Tell me how he's going to put it all together, stay on the field, and produce at a high level when he never has. Huh?

The Cards are not a "tight budget" team. They're middle of the pack. Not spending at least a middle tier payroll is a slap in the face to people spending their hard earned dollars for entertainment.

You might want to do a little research other than just reading stats.
Or else read the comments of OTHER posters who actually watch and study the game.
If you had at all....you’d KNOW that May is nothing like Mikolas as a pitcher!
His problem has been staying healthy which of course will be his main issue.
Oh....and since you’re big on stats you might notice that HE HAS been productive when healthy.
Prior to last season his career ERA was just above 3.00 which is very good!
Now.....he did have his worst season in 2025 but was healthy and threw his most innings by far.
Of course he was also recovering from surgery which could be the cause?
Might be due for a bounce back as only 28.
Seems like a low risk high potential reward on just a one year deal?

Glad to educate you a bit. Next time trying educating yourself before posting.
Huh????????????????

I think Bloom could get a guy like May, coming off an injury, on a one year "prove it" deal.

Excellent signing

Sure he might not stay healthy the entire season

BUT

If he stays healthy and has a solid first half, then you can flip him if the fear is he can't stay healthy.

Very smart move by C. Bloom w/little risk (likely) money wise.

May has great movement on his slider/sweeper and can reach 98 on his fastball. His avg. velocity did drop from almost 97 to just 95 last year. Of course he has struggled with many injuries in his career, with TJ in '21 and flexor tendon surgery in '23. Once traded to the Red Sox at the deadline last season, he started 5 games in August with two decent starts but got hit hard in his last two. He only pitched 1 game in September, and that was 3 innings in relief on September 3. He had forearm soreness and did not pitch again in the regular season and was left off Boston's playoff roster.

I have concerns about his arm being healthy, hopefully he will be OK to start the '26 season. At least they only signed him for one year. The Cardinals have still not announced the amount of the salary he will receive, but I have seen speculation that it will include a lot of incentives. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

Great evaluation. We can only hope that he stays healthy.

So. He was shut down. And hasn’t pitched since being shut down. Isn’t that odd?

You are correct, they “ should “ be a mid market spending team, but they aren’t going to be again until after the labor dispute is resolved. So spending what money Bill is willing to spend “ right now” on an oft injured guy, is curious to me.
Give Bloom credit though, he obviously has pleased many on here, so his approval rating is still currently high.

It is very concerning to me. I understand his contract is pending a physical, and the Cardinals have not yet announced his signing.

Forearm soreness to end his season is not a good sign. I hope he is required to pass a physical for this contract.

So 7-11 with a 5 ERA…..for 2 of the best teams in MLB…..
I’m sure that will translate to a great record with a sub .500 team
