JJ Wetherholt is signing autographs tonight at 5:00pm for a game that starts an hour later.

Lineup hasn't released yet, but that's telling me that he's not playing for the 3rd straight game..

That's how I read that particular tea leaf
What's your take on why he's not playing?

no clue, they haven't said. He's not sick. He gave a testimonial on Faith and Family night last night before the game. And signed autographs with Ralston before tonight's game. Probably tweaked something? Just a guess. I'm sure someone will dig out the truth soon.

That's my comp.... elite fastball, needing a better slider
he's going to strike out a lot of batters, but it's going to take a TON of pitches to do it.

not sure how he'll make far in games
So a future closer?

Great fastball, questionable offspeed. That's the M O he had in college...the scouting reports don't lie. Sliders are hangers for him.
No they don't. Which is why he will not and should not be in the MLs next year. Give him 1-2 years to work on secondary pitches. He should be able to get there...

That's his floor, it's always been his floor. Hopefully, he's a starter for the Cards. That fastball is truly something.

My hope is next season he is put on steady diet of Sliders and Changeups. He will need a lot of familiarity with those pitches, much more so than he has now. He's going to give up a lot of HR's until he knows where those pitches are going on a consistent basis. Let him fail, it's bound to happen...I'm more interested in him getting a feeling for those offspeed pitches...and at least 2 of them becoming viable offerings.

Anyone banking on him being a fast riser in our system and starting right away in the Majors, should rethink that.

Where he starts next season? Where ever they can find a good catcher who can guide him. He has an elite fastball with excellent run. Linarez, maybe Rodriguez? I'm not overly confident in Campos right now, that Peoria rotation has been the worst rotation we've seen since Springfield 2021. Is it Campos' fault? Probably not entirely, but Saladin, Salas and Davila couldn't have all sucked at the same time all on their own could they? And not for 5 straight months.

you and I agree, I just posted that below

he needs more familiarity with offspeed pitches. He has to learn where they're going to go. Think about Mathews, he's slider and change up pitches...he's a master at those two pitches, he knows where they're going no matter what. I hope that Doyle can get to half that level with his offspeed.

I think he’ll be a starter. I watched and he had a ferocity like we saw in college. Like another New Hampshire guy - Cris Carpenter.
He threw a fastball that probably averaged over 97. He gets swings on high strikes and that may be hard in the MLB, but it could be fun if he can control it when he needs to bring it down.
He throws both a slider and a slower curve (probably threw more curves).
He threw maybe 1-2 change ups that weren’t good.
But it’s four pitches and should improve the curve and/or slider.
He wasn’t great tonight but he looked like he can be elite.

Any indication why JJ has missed 3 games in a row?

I'm guessing fatigue. He's played almost twice the games this year than he's ever played before. 13 more games for memphis and then probably off to the AFL.
