It will take Matz maybe a month before he trips over the baseline and is out for two months. MM - No reason to be in STL IF "reset" is a real thing. Even if not a real thing he has no reason to be in STL.
As ST progresses, the in-game AB's for regular season starters increases. Let Mathews face those hitters to see how he responds. Give him a couple shots at facing MLB players. Then when he goes to Memphis he knows what to work on instead of using regular season MLB games to work out performance issues. I mean MLB is about the best facing the best.
Talent wise you may be right. Money wise there are $18 million reasons Mikolas is in the rotation. Plus, he actually does ok results wise. I would love to see another 18-4 season to earn his millions.
He's given up more hits and earned runs than every single pitcher in baseball the last two years.
His ERA is over 5 and he's given up 52 home runs
He doesn't walk anybody, but doesn't strike out anybody either... so just an awful lot of contact and runs against.

And 2025 begins a NEW SEASON.
In 19 of his starts last year gave up 3 runs or less. Thats how and why the Cardinals went 16-16 in his 32 starts.

He sucks.
His ERA was well above league average in wins and losses last year. In ND’s it was basically league average.
At 36 years old he isn’t getting any younger, so a new season isn’t necessarily a good thing.

That why they play the games.

-If Matz starts, then pretty good odds he'll be on the IL by the end of April (or traded by June)
-If Mikolas pitches like he has the last two seasons (5.04 ERA/1.30 WHiP), then he should be DFA'd by Memorial Day
Then McGreevy would probably be first up (for Matz) with Mathews easily, and logically if "play the kids" is more than a scam to slice payroll, slide into Mikolas' slot.
Both young starters could then get some solid major league innings in, readying them for a full 2026 season.

Fills the role of a #5 is all.
If he was paid like Fedde he get little space on CT, as is,
he's an overpaid #5 in his last season.

I'm torn. Quinn Mathews has shown incredible potential, and seeing him reassigned to minor league camp is frustrating. However, this move could allow him to develop further and be ready for big games. Let's hope he quickly joins the main roster to shine on the mound. Go, Cardinals !
