When Pop Haines was called up to the Cardinals, one of his former managers bet a suit that Haines wouldn't last 6 weeks in the majors. Haines went on to win 210 games and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1970:

Two years ago today, the Cardinals acquired Nolan Arenado from the Rockies. See why Arenado's contract details may have been the most difficult part of the deal and what Arenado remembered from his first trip to St. Louis:

Cardinals second baseman George Toporcer was widely credited as the first major-league infielder to wear glasses during a game, earning him the nickname, "Specs." See the story below to learn more about his career, which included stints backing up two Hall of Fame second basemen: Rogers Hornsby and then Frankie Frisch.

Anyone else remember Jose DeLeon? On this date in 1988, the Cardinals traded Ricky Horton, Lance Johnson, and cash to the White Sox for the promising righthander. See how the trade worked out for both sides:

I remember when I was a kid and living and dying with every Cardinals game, I hated when Jose DeLeon pitched because it seemed to my 8-year-old self like we always lost when he pitched. It only made it worse that the announcers would always talk about how talented he was and I was shouting at the TV that he stunk!

On this date in 1982, the Cardinals and Padres finalized the trade that sent Garry Templeton to San Diego and Ozzie Smith to St. Louis. See why both clubs were eager to swap star shortstops and why the trade took months to complete:

The Cardinals inadvertently started a fashion phenomenon at Busch Stadium when they signed Scott Spiezio 17 years ago today. See how the 2nd-generation Cardinal helped them win the 2006 title:

Jim Edmonds retired on this date in 2011, just a few weeks after signing a minor-league contract to return to the Cardinals. Does Edmonds belong in the Hall of Fame?

After just three major league seasons, the Cardinals signed Albert Pujols to a $100 million contract that kept him in St. Louis for the 2006 and 2011 World Series titles (click below for details). Do you think the Cardinals would do the same at today's prices with a Pujols-type star?

With position players reporting to spring training today, it seems a good time to look back at how Bill White, Curt Flood, and others integrated the Cardinals' spring training accommodations and built a culture that helped fuel their success in the '60s:

Take a look back at arguably the best game of Tim McCarver's career: Game 5 of the 1964 World Series, when his 10th-inning, 3-run homer put the Cardinals one win away from the world championship.
