Next month will mark 72 years since Bill Veeck sold Sportsman’s Park to Anheuser-Busch for $800,000. August A. Busch Jr. wanted to rename it Budweiser Park, but the league wouldn’t allow him to name the park after a beer brand. Instead, he named it Busch Stadium, then launched Busch Beer. On this date in 1987, the Cardinals traded right fielder Andy Van Slyke, catcher Mike LaValliere, and pitcher Mike Dunne for all-star catcher Tony Pena. Though sportswriters in St. Louis and Pittsburgh immediately thought St. Louis got the better end of the trade, Pena disappointed in St. Louis while Van Slyke emerged as a Pirates star.
