On this date in 1988, the Cardinals traded Curt Ford and Steve Lake to the Phillies for Milt Thompson. In 1989, Thompson hit .290/.340/.393 with 68 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. After a down season in 1990, he hit .307 in 1991 and .293 in ’92.

On December 18, 1995, the Cardinals signed Gary Gaetti. In 2 ½ seasons, the veteran third baseman hit 51 homers and drove in 192 runs for St. Louis.

On December 18, 2004, the Cardinals traded for Mark Mulder, adding the all-star pitcher to a rotation that already had Chris Carpenter, Jason Marquis, Jeff Suppan, and Matt Morris. Unfortunately, after a 16-win 2005 season, injuries derailed Mulder's career.

The key to that trade was Dan Haren, who had an effective 2005 with a decent Oakland club and had a decent career. Injury aside, it's an interesting debate as to whether that was a good trade to make.

I don't blame Jocketty for making this trade. Mulder was just 26, so he should have had plenty of career ahead of him, and as a general rule, I always prefer getting a proven star for a prospect. The chances that Haren would go on to have a better career than Mulder were relatively small at the time; play those odds and more often than not, you'll come out ahead.

On December 23, 1995, one day after a new ownership group purchased the Cardinals, the team spent $33 million to sign outfielder Ron Gant and starting pitcher Andy Benes.

On this date in 2011, the Cardinals signed Carlos Beltran to a two-year contract to help fill the gap left by the departure of Albert Pujols. In two seasons with St. Louis, Beltran hit .282/.343/.493 with 56 homers and 181 RBIs.

As I recall Mulder had a hip problem. Hated this trade. The contract extension was horrible.

On January 5, 2010, Matt Holliday and the Cardinals agreed to a seven-year, $120 million contract that represented the largest deal in team history. See how the Cardinals outbid the Red Sox to keep Holliday in St. Louis.
