This Date in Cardinals History

I've always been strangely fascinated by that period from 1988 after Jack Clark left until McGwire where the Cardinals went through Bob Horner, Pedro Guerrero, Andres Galarraga, Gregg Jefferies, John Mabry, and Dmitri Young at first base. Growing up, I was always baffled as to why other teams had franchise cornerstone studs at first base and we were always settling for someone whose previous team had given up on them (this mostly applied to Horner, Guerrero, Galarraga, and Jefferies, and not so much young players like Mabry and Young).

The Cardinals had a few good years from those 1st baseman.

I remember the first time I saw (or even heard of Izzy). He'd come up with the Mets, and I was in Chicago on business attending a Cubs game at Wrigley against the Mets. Izzy was brought in and everyone around me was making fun of his name. I even said something to the effect of wanting to hear how Harry would pronounce it. What makes that all etched into my memory is that a screaming line drive was sent up the firs base side stands, down the line towards the bullpen where we were sitting. I'd had far too many beers to exhibit good judgement and stuck my hand up to catch it. It make an awful sound and went through my hand. Instead of pain, my hand went straight to swelling, and I could see imprints of the seams along the right side of my palm. It hurt like hell the next morning, though. I'm lucky nothing was broken. I don't remember the Cub batter but I sure remember that it was the Met with the goofy name pitching.

Marquis and King were instrumental in the great 2004-2005 seasons.

An amazing thing about that season is that Marquis, the 5th starter, started 32 games. The other four started 122. That leaves only 8 games started by others, 5 of which were from rookie Dan Haren. Carpenter was the only one in the rotation to start fewer than 30, coming in at 28.

Alberto Reyes started two games in the last week or so in the season, and Randy Flores started one game right at the end.

I don't recall ever seeing such stability in a starting rotation for the Cardinals.

And the bullpen options were stacked.

Reminded me of a daily relay race. The starter calmly passes the baton to a middle reliever, then to another, then to the closer.

Such a well oiled machine.

Maquis and King were so solid.
