2023
Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. will not participate in Tuesday's All-Star Game after feeling tightness in his right calf during Monday's Home Run Derby, the team announced. Robert had an MRI and is day-to-day.

It’s amazing that no matter how many times you show proof otherwise, people will believe what they want to believe regardless.

Proof of what. We’re talking about JW here. Has he ever been in the HR derby?
My point is that well established MLB players have had issues after the HR derby. JW has been a mess the last few years and JUST righted himself 3 months ago. He’s not SCHwarber, Ohtani, Judge. He was almost left in ST because his swing was so screwed up. So all your data doesn’t apply to JW.

I'm with you.
I disagree. I dont think golfers are hurt when they spend 45 mins on the range trying to gain yardage.

Has the HR derby actually ever ruined a player?

I do know this much. If Wsljer starts the second half in a slump, CT we ill certainly blame the derby.
And CardsTalk may be right. Who knows?

Home Run Derby and Player Performance
The Myth of the Home Run Derby Curse

The belief that participating in the Home Run Derby negatively impacts a player's performance in the second half of the season is largely considered a myth. While some players have experienced declines in their statistics after the Derby, research indicates that this is not unique to Derby participants.
Performance Comparison
Studies show that players who participate in the Home Run Derby do not decline in performance more than other All-Stars who do not participate. Here’s a comparison of performance trends:

Group First Half OPS Second Half OPS Change in Performance
Home Run Derby Participants .945 .934 -0.011
Non-Derby All-Stars .905 .818 -0.087

Reasons for Performance Changes

Selection Bias: Players chosen for the Derby are typically those having exceptional first halves, making it difficult to maintain that level of performance throughout the entire season.
Statistical Variability: The first half of the season is not a perfect predictor of second-half performance. Many factors, including fatigue and injuries, can influence a player's output.

Conclusion
Overall, while some players may see a drop in their statistics after participating in the Home Run Derby, this trend is not significantly worse than that of other All-Stars. The idea that the Derby inherently harms performance is unfounded and does not hold up under statistical scrutiny.

Yea for a lot of players it’s the grind of the 162 games that causes their second half numbers to decline some

It’s easy to say it’s the HR Derby’s fault

I mentioned in another thread that I talked to an ex-Mlb player today who was taking bats to the AS Game for players his company reps. He wouldn't tell me who, but one of the teams had a "brass" meeting today with the sole subject being one of their players who had been invited to the HR Derby and how to keep him out of it. According to him, most of the teams absolutely hate having a player in the HR Derby and see absolutely no upside.

There is no upside for the player. Risk of injury and in the case of a young player risk of screwing up a swing and routine.

The upside for the player is exposure, name recognition, growing their brand. Not a ton of upside for the org, though.

It’s surprising that teams that are data driven would believe in superstition like that and have meetings about something that isn’t true

There’s also no upside to any of the players playing in the all star game period so I guess they will have meetings to keep them from playing in it period

Ronnie Dobbs wrote: 09 Jul 2026 12:45 pm I wrote awhile back that these guys have probably dreamed about doing something like this their entire lives since they were kids. They might never get a chance to participate in something like this again. Like 99.99999999% of the planet will never get to do something like this. He can take his family and have a great couple of days. Also, what about the financial implications? He gets his name out there on a national level. He is looking at bigger endorsements and name recognition on top of doing something he's always dreamed about.

Besides, it's been proven that the derby messing with a player's swing or injury is not really a thing. I did a little bit of research and found this study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33738309/

Conclusion: HRD participants did not have increased odds of being placed on the injured list during the second half of the MLB season compared with controls, nor did they experience second-half performance declines in offensive production versus controls when multivariable linear regression analysis was performed.
Yea, I think it's safe to say that he made the correct decision. A night he'll never forget. Into the history books. And a cool $1 million. I have a feeling that's just the start for him, though.
