Good:
- Mailloux hit and fight
- Snuggeruud and Carboneau urgency and toughness
- Blues Penalty Kill
- Fowler as always
- Dvorsky showed a bit of impact, but not enough to make the team IMO.
Bad:
- Blues Powerplay
- Blues best players did not impress (except Binnington and Fowler)
- This game does not indicate a strong start to the season.
Ugly:
- What was the purpose of the Parayko actions after the Sunny hit?
- Blues Mgmt telling us that Jiricek is the next Petro. That smacks of smoke being blown...
So you didn’t like it earlier and complained when DA didn’t talk up our prospects, and now you don’t like it and complain when management does. Which is it?
Has there ever been a hockey player in history for which management reporting went from NOTHING POSITIVE to HOFer overnight, skipping every baby step? Let's notify Guinness about Jiricek and the Blues.
What they should have said....
Something believable such as Jiricek is improving every month. He has elite talent. He just needs to put on muscle and strength. He will play in the AHL this year if his progress continues.
A few things i didnt like that i have seen in the past with this line up
-Buchy not converting on sweet Thomas set ups. Seen this movie before, the top line has to convert vs a (bleep) Hawks line up. They had it on a string for extended periods but it was too cute at times they need to attack the net.
-Schenn on top PP unit, he often loses the puck or makes a poor play Schenn is definitely a top 6 forward but id prefer to see him on 2nd group
-Joseph on the 3rd line. If the Blues want to be a top WC team then the 3rd line needs to produce as well. Joseph for me is a 4th liner hes an excellent skater, checks, hits but has poor puck skills. Plays often die on his stick. Im sure we will see Texier in that spot as well.
Again its only camp but i hope these arent things we are still talking about in a month
I cant believe Im gonna say this, but I actually missed John Kelly after hearing Trainwreck Kerbs last night. I have a feeling ill be listening to the opponents feed all season if that’s what’s in store. Pathetic

To add to that, I was very relieved to hear Jamie rather than Vitale. Kerbs is fine enough when he just sticks to calling the plays, but Kerbs + Vitale is a nightmare adventure.

Kelly's sound created a vibe of respect for the game and urgency to report the facts.
The new sound is urgency for the announcers to sound funny. It reminded me of morning drive-time radio.
It was a good preseason tilt. Much was learned and much was displayed.
The boys took their foot off the pedal with a cold goalie in the third, and it bit them
I thought the hit on Sunny should have been whistled for a penalty.
I haven't yet heard Kerbs call a televised match, but I agree that his semi-snarky frat-boy style is a far cry from the dignity and grace that JK brought..

Kinda like they did the last 2 min of the playoffs last season...preseason or not nothing has changed. How is playing a full 60min of hockey still a problem with this team?

Oh man, Ive never heard Vitale do color or whatever his role is, but if Kerbs calls a game without explaining the play most of the time when Vitale is with him, then I can already confidently state that they’ll be absolutely unlistenable to me.
Does Kerber always try to be cute and off topic when callin the games? From what I heard, it sounded like he was blatantly trying to impress the audience, or Rivers, or all of the above, by trying to come up with unfunny antidotal stories and quips. His entire time on air last night just came across as sophomoric hijinx as if he was blatantly focusing on auditioning for a guest spot on Benny Hill instead of doing what he should be doing…callin the (bleep) game and tellin me who all has the puck and who’s shooting etc. I usually dont even care about the announcers and that whole side of the game that miuch, but listenin to this goober’s attempt at being a standup comedian was maddening, and to be honest, I felt like Rivers fell into the unfunny escapades trap.and was doing it too.
Just my opinion, ill get over it by not listening to Kerber’s broadcast.

I agree with your take. Don't hear near as much of him as you guys in St. Louis do but your characterization is spot-on with what I have heard of his broadcasts. He needs to stick to play calling, and he still needs to work on that.
A good radio hockey announcer is a picture painter. On TV the announcer-painter connects the dots, game context, who has the puck, who is involved in the play, setups for the color man.

I agree with all of that too, hopefully the Blues see this as well and doesn’t let it continue if this is how they act during the season.

As a teen-ager I listened to the Blues and Dan Kelly every chance I got, nearly every game. He put a picture of the action in your head and kept it there, felt like you were sitting right next to him in the booth. All of us that had that pleasure, we were spoiled by the best. John Kelly is very good but it's akin to listening to Chip after you've experienced Harry.

Fair enough, the Coaches can't get that idea drilled into their psyche too soon.
Its the same way an athlete should practice. If you half-(donkey) the drills , you are prone to half-assing the play in a game.
This is an Unfrozen Caveman suggestion, but once Schenn, or Mailloux, or whoever sees the foot coming off the pedal, they should look for an after the whistle scrum to wake their fellows up.
I’ve been listening to Kerber since he got the gig. I have no issues, I wasn’t a fan of John Kelly. I thought Kerbs did him an absolute solid during the Finals and letting him call the second period like his dad, but, I wanted to scream every time “Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!” Not a fan.

Dan Kelly was before my time, but I really wish I would have had the pleasure of listening to his work cause its obvious he was one of the greats since Ive never heard one single person disparage him or criticize his work. Ive never been a fan of John, but I honestly do have more respect for his work and dedication after hearing Kerber’s felonious hatchet job last night. Wooooboy, terrible doesn’t begin to describe what I listened to.
I’ve been meaning to comment on the game for a few days & I hope I’m not creating the fall guy before the season starts; Did anyone besides Harry Deals notice that the Thomas, Buchnevich, Snuggerud line were -6 for the evening (-2 each). It reminded me so much of the Thomas, Buch, Kyrou line which frustrated so many of us by trying to overpass & lose the puck. Maybe it’s just too hard to forgive Buch for that post season ending blunder to not kill the clock & seal a victory & move on in the playoffs. Buch has some talent but seems to charge up the ice only to lose the puck. Just disappointing to see Buch & Thomas not connecting better on offense & poor Snuggie probably get the blame for being the rookie. I want the team to win and I just hope that who ever plays with Thomas makes him better not worse.
Instead of starting a Buchnevich column, I’m willing to give them more chances. He was pretty good on that 12 game run just to get into the playoffs… but he does frustrate me too & can play like he’s lost
