The city of st Pete and Pinellas county struck a deal with the rays to fork over $650M for a new stadium, and the rays backed out after the storms. As a floridian I loved Tropicana. Anything to get out of the heat. I understand it all well. St Pete is fixing the roof because they are contractually obligated... after that bye bye Ray's. Ownership wants fans. And the Canada thing was never a serious consideration by mlb. And while the stadium was indeed air conditioned, it is not a great place to watch anything. It was built on the cheap bc the city was told it needed to build a stadium before a franchise was awarded to St. Pete, and that’s what they did.
The current owner is selling the team. Baseball doesn’t want the rays to move out of Tampa bay. Have you looked at attendance? Nobody goes regardless of how competitive they are. Florida and baseball just don't mix. The potential new owner has already said he wants a stadium in Tampa. If the deal goes through, they're likely staying in the region. MLB wants them to stay as well, partly b/c they want to expand to two more teams. Relocating the Rays makes that more difficult.
