See why the Cardinals gambled that Carlos Beltran could recover from knee surgery and be the impact bat they needed for 2012:

When David Eckstein signed with the Cardinals, he thought back to a game he'd played against the Cardinals 2 1/2 years earlier. See why that moment stuck with him, and what Walt Jocketty liked about his new shortstop:

Just months after he won 22 games and finished third in the Cy Young voting, the Cardinals signed Matt Morris to a three-year extension. See what made Morris's deal so unusual and why it took just two phone calls:

See how Tony La Russa's conversation with Scott Boras helped the Cardinals sign Matt Holliday to a team-record contract 13 years ago today:

See why negotiations between Jack Clark and the Cardinals broke down and he signed with the Yankees for less money 35 years ago today:

21 years ago today, Ozzie Smith and his family planned to either celebrate his election into the Hall of Fame or go to Steak 'N Shake. Spoiler alert: they did not go to Steak 'N Shake.

Ahead of the 1988 season, Whitey Herzog didn't think Bob Horner was a good fit for St. Louis's first base vacancy. The Cardinals signed him anyway. See how it turned out:

See how Scott Rolen's feud with Tony La Russa led to the star third baseman's trade to the Blue Jays 15 years ago today:

See what percent of the vote Bob Gibson received when he was voted into the Hall of Fame 42 years ago today. Hint: it's probably lower than you think!

85 years ago today, the hero of the Cardinals' first World Series championship, Grover Cleveland Alexander, was elected to the Hall of Fame. See why his story was equal parts triumphant and tragic:

79 years ago today, after Rogers Hornsby was informed he had been elected to the Hall of Fame, he said he was honored, but there were two things more important at the moment:

When Stan Musial was elected to the Hall of Fame 54 years ago today, 23 voters didn't have him on their ballot, including one who reportedly voted for 10 players but didn't include Musial. See what St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports editor Bob Broeg wrote about those who didn't vote for The Man:

On this date in 1968, Gashouse Gang outfielder Joe Medwick was elected to the Hall of Fame. Take a look back at the Cardinals star who was kicked out of Game 7 of the 1934 World Series:

As we wait to hear whether Scott Rolen has been elected to the Hall of Fame, this feels like a good day to look back at the day he became a Cardinal:

Look back at the trade that brought John Stuper to St. Louis. Stuper played a key role in the '82 championship, pitching a complete game to win Game 6 of the World Series:

On this date in 2002, the Cardinals made So Taguchi their first Japanese-born player. See how So overcame early adversity, including assignment to the minor leagues, to become a valuable piece of two World Series teams:
