Eli Willits #1 in this mock.
I doubt that but I really like who this mock has the Cards taking:

I don't see why everyone is so confident that the Nats are picking Holliday. They already have Holliday in James Wood. I think they go Willits

Cincinnati getting Burns last year and Hernandez this year would be scary.
but for them, quite the coup if they can pull it off
Hernandez and Roby might be just as good of a potential RH combo in the future.

you talking about Seth Hernandez?
don't think the Cards are drafting him per Jim Callis

I've seen some mocks having Hernandez as high as 2 and 3. He is the only pitcher in the draft mentioned as a potential #1 Ace that I've seen.

He's also a high school pitcher, so the bust potential is very high and if he does pan out, it'll be 4-5 years down the road.

Not saying I wouldn't love it if the Cardinals took him, but high school pitchers are always somewhat scary to take high in the draft.

Watched Oregon State today as I wanted to see Aiva Arquette bat.
Didn’t disappoint as he blasted a deep HR to left center.
18th HR of year.
Big size at 6-5, 220 smooth SS.
See why he is rated so highly.

yes, very intriguing.
but from what I gather from the many mocks, Cards would prefer high school position player or college pitcher.
lot of time left between now and actual draft.
who knows?

Not sure I understand your point. Wood is an outfielder and Holiday is a SS/3B

Along this line I would be curious using the last 10 years as a measuring stick, how many selected high school players taken in the 1st or 2nd rounds went on to actually be a productive major leaguer for the team that chose them? I get the potential aspect of it. You get to select a high tool player and stick them in the system and forget about for a few years as they develop and learn. It seems to me though that is also the down fall. You take a young man just reaching his prime years for wine, women and song. Give them some money to play with and then ask them to be a star. I just cannot remember how many have actually gone on to be a regular in the next 3 to 5 years. Seems to me rounds 1 thru 4 at least should be reserved for college players. At least you have them a season or two in the advanced leagues, and have had a chance to be social to determine if they have the character and drive to go further. Let's be honest. Like most anything in life it is not so much the physical tools that stop promising careers so much as a loss of focus and drive to live the dream one day. Also, you can have all the physical tools but if you don't have the smarts to know what your strengths and weaknesses are you can never be your best you.

I am not so sure the baseball systems are the best place to learn anyway. Hence why the Cardinals are spending so much time on it now. A player can go through 4 or 5 different managers, hitting and pitching coaches in a few years and really get a lot of the wrong messaging if not monitored correctly. In college they can see the same staff for 4 of the more critical years. Stability matters. Just a thought.

and reading Goold's yesterday-chat this morning, he said impact bat, not pitcher, is most likely what the Cards draft.

I wouldn’t mind a pitcher in the first round and then getting someone like Petry in the 2nd round if he could make it to 55. Or just go impact bat in the first round and still take Petry in the 2nd round.

Big LH power bat. And I think Holliday ends up in LF too

I have to agree with BA on this one...from what I heard this morning, Washington likely goes the Prep route, save some money and draft Holliday, Hernandez or Willits.

Who do you consider "impact bat" in the 1st round outside of Willits/Holliday? Arquette, Carlson and Parker all seem too unsure a thing to pick at #5.

emerging .... Summerhill from Arizona has returned successfully from 2 injuries this spring. He's a legit hitter, fielder, runner...could be an option if they want a College Bat...other than Arquette.
