5. OF Ike Irish

Yes, I'm warming to Mr. Irish...he's raking. He's not behind the plate and is focused solely on raking and corner OF.

I wouldn't be upset with Arnold, but like a few on here, he's not finishing with a flourish you'd expect. He still has the Post Season to shine. But you want more than 5 IP, and 5 K's from him if he's to crack my Top 5 again.

Gavin Kilen is still a favorite of mine, but I'm not seeing him at #5 at the moment.

I know Hernandez will likely not be there at #5, a shame for the Cards. He's FOTR starter for sure in 4-5 years.
CHime in, give your Top 5.

Critique mine....please. It's not perfect...far from.
Agreement with you on Hernandez and Witherspoon as being good top 5 picks in the draft.
Got to have Holliday in it IF you list Hernandez, But I see your point. Arquette and Willits should go by the Cards at 5 either.
Then as we've discussed before there a lot of next grouping players.
With the current makeup of players in the system though that works out perfectly for the HS players
and develop them how you want them to be.

My Ike Irish would be Devin Taylor.
So in keeping to that theme

Hernandez
Arquette
Willits
Witherspoon
Taylor

what do y'all think of drafting this guy?

Aiva Arquette
SS
OREGON STATE
DOB:
10-17-2003
Height:
6-5
Weight:
220

Scouting Report
Bats: R, Throws: R
Arquette might be the top college position player in the class … but you’ll find people who say he’s a back-of-the-first-round talent, too. The Hawaiian standout transferred to Oregon State from Washington this year, and he’(poop) .346/.470/.692 as the Beavers have played an independent (non-conference) schedule, leading the team in homers through May 13. He has excellent hand-eye coordination, rarely swinging and missing, especially at pitches in the zone, and he doesn’t chase much, although he’s started expanding the zone a little more with two strikes as the spring has progressed. He’s an agile shortstop with excellent hands and a plus arm, but at 6-foot-5 and I’d guess about 230, he’d already be one of the biggest shortstops in MLB history, and I’d bet heavily that he goes to third base. Aside from that positional question, Arquette just hasn’t faced much good pitching this year; he’s seen enough velocity to say he can hit it, but he hasn’t seen much quality secondary stuff, and when he has faced harder sliders or changeups with some tumble, he hasn’t fared as well. There’s 25-homer upside with a strong eye and what could be really good defense at third, a Troy Glaus-ish profile, if Arquette reaches his potential.

Arquette and Kolten Wong have something in common... If you guessed height ? you were close Arquette is 6-5 and Wong 5-7
No , they are both Hawaiaan . Arquette has been best hitter in the Northwest. Very good player ! He won't last too long in the draft.

Kiley mentions a "Top Tier" of players in the draft and that number is "10". Every fan, Team, pundit has their own idea of a "Top Tier", but for this exercise let's assume there's a Tier like there was last season with 1-8 for 95% of last season until Braden Montgomery broke his wrist, making it a Top Tier of 7.

So...we have a pool of 10 to choose from if we want to go close to slot and pick from the best talent in the draft. Those are:

Holliday, SS/3B, HS
Willits, SS, HS
Carlson, SS, HS
Parker, SS, HS
Hernandez, RHP, HS
Arnold, LHP, Coll.
Doyle, LHP, Coll.
Anderson, LHP, Coll.
Witherspoon, RHP, Coll
Arquette, SS/2B, Coll

-------------

watch for other publications as to what they're saying about their Top Tier....most of the above will be in there. So I believe Kiley's Top 10/Top Tier is good basis.

Speaking of last year, I was looking through the stats of a lot of the first round picks so far and the numbers from most of these players have been pretty incredible so far. I know it’s early still, but last year’s first round has gotten off to a great start. IMO

MLB.com's updated Top 200 list. Their Top 10 looks close to ESPN's

5. Eli Willits, SS, Fort Cobb-Broxton HS, Okla.
6. Aiva Arquette, 2B, Oregon State
7. Billy Carlson, SS, Corona HS, Calif.
8. Kyson Witherspoon, RHP, Oklahoma
9. Liam Doyle, LHP, Tennessee

The Top 10 list above is a ranking not a mock. If the Top 4 players selected on Draft Day would be :
Holliday, Hernandez, Anderson, and Arnold what would be your guess as to who the Cardinals select at No. 5 ?
The 2nd best BAT rated in the draft OR the 4th best pitcher ?

For if Cardinals had the top 4 rated the same way and they came off the board exactly as listed .. would they want a Willits ? Arquette? OR go with a Witherspoon ? Doyle? type

I never said it was a "mock", and I know the difference between a "draft board" and a "mock". Incredible, I know

I said these Top 10's were emerging Tier 1 lists for this draft. The top players have emerged, and both ESPN and MLB made a point of showing the Top Tier players (10 of them this year).

So at #5 pick in the draft, we "Should", and I stress "Should" be selecting a player from the Top 10. This bit of information helps readers, fans, etc, etc.

Of course, anything can happen, and the Cards could be the Angels, who historically pick players well below their draft ranking,in order to save money for later in the draft.

I'm starting to hop on the Eli Willits bandwagon.

Good size, great speed, switch-hitter, good genes, comes from a baseball family, doesn't turn 18 until December.
Has the type of skill set which could allow him to play anywhere on the infield and anywhere in the OF. Not a big power guy, but the bat could be special.

I'm just not THAT excited by these pitchers and our boy Holliday will be long gone by #5.

For the sake of my point , I was noting for the CT posters that if the true draft took the guys in that order , who may the Cards take at No. 5 the 2nd best BAT or the 4th best ARM ? Sorry if you felt I was implying otherwise. My apologies Of course you know the difference between a prospect ranking list and a mock .

For some reason, I'm not as excited about this draft as I was last year's, even with a better draft position. As some have said, the cream of this crop just isn't that exciting or sure-fire. I mean if Willits was in last year's draft class, would he be anywhere near the top 10 or even 25?
