On this date in 2012, a single inning proved the difference between the Cardinals and Cubs. It just turned out to be one heck of an inning.

Nine months after the Cardinals ended the Giants’ 1987 world championship hopes in a hard-fought, seven-game NLCS, the two teams came to blows in a midsummer brawl involving Will Clark, Ozzie Smith, and Jose Oquendo.

Hard slide by Clark into Oquendo. Jose kicked back to get back up. Clark grappled with Oquendo. Then Ozzie jumped in from behind with a sucker punch.

My memory of this is that Ozzie and Jose looked smaller and Will Clark looked bigger. Ozzie and Jose were definitely punching up.

But baseball reference lists Ozzie at 5’11 and Oquendo at 5’10”. Will Clark was 6’2”. Not that much of a difference height wise. And it was 2 on 1 scrum for a few seconds until the benches got there.

Will Clark joined the Cardinals 12 year later in 2000

Anyway, the scrappy theme fits with this year’s draft.

14 years ago today, Whitey Herzog was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His only goal? To keep from breaking down and crying in gratitude.

I wonder if Mo can summon his self from over a decade ago and make some decent trades in the coming days. Don't consider that a statement of optimism.
