BT is insufferable. I switch to the radio broadcast on the MLB app. It’s a blessing when BT skips a series, as he did with the recent west coast series.

Either the majority of viewers like Brad and the rest or the team knows we have no choice so they don't care. I'm sure there are people who find Brad entertaining. Since I am in market I can't choose the other team's broadcast or I would.

He is not wrong. When Harry was the main man on KMOX in the sixties, he was over the top all the time. Thing is, most of the games were not televised, so unless you were at the game, you did not realize how much Harry exaggerated.
At least he made the game interesting. Harry announced the game as a fan and every hit and out meant something. Many listeners in the late 40's 50's and 60's never had the opportunity to go to a game, but they loved baseball just because of Harry.

I wouldn’t say ugly, but certainly not very attractive either.

I never knew how much I would miss Edmonds commentary until listening to motor mouth who thinks he is a comedian Brad Thompson.

I know he isn't going to criticize the team but listening to Thompson make it seems like we are watching the 27 Yankees.

Thompson needs to be regulated to the children Fredbird show only.

Disagree, I think she's attractive. We all have different tastes and I like brunettes.

Was waiting for a comment from you, OR! Knew it would be spot-on. I didn't start listening to Harry until 1961-2 but man, Harry was certainly an entertaining personality who KNEW baseball. His descriptions of Stan Musial's bat selection was a work of art. Also, remember when the Cards would be making a run for the pennant and Harry'd sing after a victory: "The Cardinals are coming tra-la-la-laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"!!
Man, that was great. He wasn't the same after leaving (fired) the Cards (and going to Oakland), then later he became a caricature of himself (with the Cubs).

This is right on the money. He would be fantastic in that role. I am glad to hear Cards Talk still has some great ideas to offer the Redbird's management. I sure hope they get him out of the booth. I bet Sweeney and Dani have so much more to offer. BT is just in the wrong position and it's painful for the few viewers they still have left.

It's a pretty bad combo when the announcer won't shut-up and has nothing of value to say.

He is not wrong. When Harry was the main man on KMOX in the sixties, he was over the top all the time. Thing is, most of the games were not televised, so unless you were at the game, you did not realize how much Harry exaggerated.
And you were at every game with radio in hand?
Why would he need to be at every game? Going to one and seeing different from what you are hearing isn't enough? Why would he have to test that 80 other times?

Besides, the few national TV broadcasts usually used one announcer from each team to do play-by-play. So he could've noticed it watching tv.
Anyone can perhaps exaggerate once in awhile..the poster said "all the time".

So how could one game be enough to make a judgement?
So a person can witness/hear something but NOT make an observation because they only saw/heard it once? How many times do you think is needed for an observation to be validated? You do understand that announcers have patterns? Its not like Harry called each game differently. He wasn't showing up saying "Im going to be overly dramatic today." Or "(bleep). I'm going to be really understated for this one." As someone who saw Harry on WGN for several years, I can say he was over the top.
Well you could say the same thing if you heard someone once and they weren't over the top, correct?

I believe a lot of folks would agree that by the time Harry got to the Cubs he was more showman than broadcaster. "Over the top" or entertaining and painting a picture of the game for the listener? Everyone has an opinion.

The broadcaster I heard doing Cubs games was a far cry from his Cardinal days.
His Cardinals tenure was before my time. So I will rely on what those who were around then say. Harry might have been less over the top, but ive heard he could be vindictive and spiteful. Heard stories of him bashing Kenny Boyer at every opportunity. All because Boyer refused a pregame interview request.
Heard about the Boyer thing from others but have no first hand knowledge of it.

I think we can agree that players were not nearly as insulated from the team broadcasters as they are today. I would imagine most broadcasters in that era may have had some run ins with players because the announcers then weren't as quick to sugarcoat things as they do today.

Image, marketing, etc. are more important than "telling it like it is".

No doubt Harry had a giant ego as most of those guys did and with popularity apparently took it too far when Gussie decided to let him go.
I think Harry was just a guy who developed a huge ego and started to act like a huge jerk whenever he felt like it. I dont think Boyer was the only player. Just maybe the highest profile Cardinal that Harry treated that way. Then he had his issues with Mr. Busch. That was idiotic on his part.
I'm thinking part of the deal with his time with the Cubs was hom playing up to the crowd was because the team wasn't very good and Harry stoked interests with his antics as opposed to his time with the Cardinals where the team had a great deal of success and he was in the background .

I also remember him doing White Sox games which again was nothing like when he went to the Cubs.

I've been muting the sound more and more as the season progresses. They aren't cutting it, and the in-game interviews are HORRIBLE. All interviews should be pregame or postgame. We didn't tune it for that, nor is it rarely interesting. Dani is a big NO, I mute her everytime now. They all should be traded immediately. :D

Red, I grew up listening to Harry on KMOX, and he was great. Harry was a thousand times better than Brad Thompson. My post was just to state the obvious that Chip Caray does share some of the same characteristics that his grandfather displayed.

I was in the 9th grade and just got home from school to hear this from Harry on the radio, 1959.

Who does the Fredbird show now? Doesn't Wexelman cover the same activities Alexa Datt did?

What does appearance have to do with her abilities?
