8.02 ERA (No, that's not a typo)

48 Hits

33 Walks

1.90 WHiP (Again, that's not a typo)

How much longer will C. Bloom allow these three STIFFS to blow games before sending one to AAA (Svanson) or just
DFA (Stanek for sure) one, maybe two?
whats rrally weird is that svanson unluke bruihl and stanek DOES have options and yet we just chose to option ryan fernandez over him for logic i cant even try to understand.

fernandez was bad last year yes, but he had a decent rookie year and while the 4 games sample soze is small, thats way more positive that he showed in 4 games than svanson
No doubt

I mean he's only in his Sophomore season, not like he's a five year veteran.

But as rbis pointed out earlier, he has been looking ever so slightly better.

As for him being here instead of at AAA, that's on Oli who very early on said he wanted him UP HERE and not at Memphis. ::crazya::

As much as i dislike Fernandez I'd have kept him, DFA'd Stanek the Stiff and his 9.00 ERA.
Agreed! That would have been the proper play in my opinion. But as I said in a different thread, money plays, and I just don't see this Org canceling him out this quickly. I think the rope is a lot longer than it should be with "Ricky"!

Bump!

Since this thread was created, here's how each of the pitchers in question have performed . . .

Bruihl - 0.00 ERA, 2.74 xERA, 2.37 FIP, 3.42 xFIP, 13.5 K/9, 3.38 BB/9, 2.2 IP
Svanson - 6.75 ERA, 11.86 xERA, 5.62 FIP, 4.12 xFIP, 6.75 K/9, 2.25 BB/9, .357
Stanek - 3.38 ERA, 3.30 xERA, 2.55 FIP, 3.34 xFIP, 10.13 K/9, 5.06 BB/9

Bruihl and Stanek have gotten excellent results with peripherals to match. Svanson's results have been the worst, but his xFIP isn't atrocious, and he's reduced his walk rate.

Note: These are miniscule sample sizes (2.2 IP for Bruihl!) but I thought it'd be fun to check in on these pitchers.

Glad to see you mention that super small sample size since Bruihl hasn't been any better.

At the time of the thread all three reeked, now only two do.

Bruihl:
Last 8 appearances
8 IP
4.87 FiP
6 Hits
4 Walks

Still needs to be replaced

Svanson:
Last 10 appearances
10 IP
5.82 FiP
9 Hits
7 Walks

Still needs to be at Memphis

The one who has done better (and I called myself a "fool" the other day for wanting to DFA him) is Stanek

Stanek:
Last 10 appearances
8 2/3 IP
2.66 FiP
5 Hits
6 Walks (still way too many)

I still hope C. Bloom DFA's Bruihl and sends Svanson to Memphis

name the 3 relievers ready and performing admirably at AAA that will translate to the MLB. These 3 will have to replace the names from the OP. When you can't find 3, maybe you can reconsider replacing players so easily.

Note ~ no, you can't take a starter and stunt his growth.

Also Note ~ Rajcic is probably the lone reliever who is possibly ready for a Bruihl or Svanson type role, until he performs poorly once, then of course we must remove him. Maybe Fernandez.

Gastelum will likely struggle...but is eventually a back of the BP type.

And...are we ready for some more Roycroft?

That's the rub of course.
That and the fact that you can't dfa a player every time he goes through a rough stretch.
Some posters on here wouldn't be able to field a roster with all the dfa suggestions.

Stank in his last 5 innings has given up just 2 hits 1 walk and struck out 6 I would hold off on releasing him now that he’s showing some progress

It's never too early to replace RP's who haven't performed since opening day.

Dozens of players have been optioned, demoted, or designated for assignment (DFA) to the minor league.

This is a common occurrence in the first two months of the MLB season due to underperformance.

Bruihl & Svanson fit the bill.

As for who to bring up?

Anyone I name someone will find fault with trying to prove their point, yet how could they be worse than Bruihl (5.00 ERA/1.44 WHiP) & Svanson (9.61 ERA/2.03 WHiP)?

Not sure how some can continue to defend not sending a young pitcher with a 9.61 ERA/2.03 WHiP to Memphis? ::crazya::

But I'll play along:

R. Fernandez
9 2/3 IP
2.79 ERA
0.83 WHiP
11 KO to 2 BB

M. Rajcic
25 1/3 IP
1.78 ERA
1.11 WHiP
29 KO to 8 BB

and I'd also like to see

L. Gastelum
19 2/3 IP
1.83 ERA
1.17 WHiP
18 KO to 12 BB

Sure his walks are high, but that's BETTER than Bruihl's 11 KO to 12 BB and in line w/Svanson's 19 KO to 13 BB.

My memory of Fernandez was 7.71 ERA, 1.71 whip in 2025. Not in a hurry to see him back. I think Gastelum will be a great late inning guy in a year or two, but what's the hurry? He's not ready yet.

Yeah, Stanek was always the most "contentious" player of debate between us. Glad we didn't DFA him. Bruihl is an incredibly small sample size and I suspect they want a second LHRP. Svanson has options, so bringing up another player (Fernandez? I'd be fine with that) is ok, as long as it's an appealing option, which was always my point.

Agree 100% on flipping Svanson and Fernadez.

Agreed

And I'm certainly not giving up on Svanson.

Just feel he needs a break from MLB allowing him to catch his breath and regain some confidence.

We now have some really great instructors with all the latest tools available to them down below.

Let them get ahold of him, diagnosis the problem(s), fix them and let's see him back here mid season!
