I consistently stated that Donovan should have been retained for 2026 - or until the summer deadline at a minimum.
I also stated that if Bloom was determined to make the grave error of trading Donovan, the return must include an established MLB outfielder or an MLB outfielder.
Most thought Bloom received good return for Donovan.
They were all wrong and I said so at the time.
My position was very, very clear - as well as being brilliantly correct: Donovan should have started the year as the starting LF while giving injury/performance insurance for the infield.
How much better would the lineup be if the Cardinals has simply done exactly as I advised?
Clearly, the team would be in far better shape - bot now, in the short term, and in the long term.
THAT is the key and relevant point in the outfield conversation.
The current mess was oh-so-easily avoidable.
Easy.
Obvious.
Correct.
I understand management’s priority to win later by building for the future. That didn’t have to completely cripple and remove all possibilities to win sooner, if the young players assert themselves, which most have. Donovan could’ve been a critical missing piece to an upper tier offense.

Instead they threw in the towel before the fight and made an unnecessary desperation trade.
Problem is, with Donovan they abandoned the present (both this year and next) and received nothing that is likely help them "win later".
They got a novelty pitcher and guys they could’ve easily still got back at the deadline. Swing and a miss unless Cijintje becomes a true ace and a couple of the others become valuable contributors. Otherwise, extending our homegrown guy would’ve been the right move.

Mel, it is pretty obvious they were clearing all players who had any value and dumping contracts. They decided they were not going to extend Donnie so they traded him. If one guy they got pans out in the next couple of years they are happy. Plus, they are figuring that Baez will be on the team next season. I loved Donnie, his tough at bats, etc... At least JJW takes similar sorts of at bats and will most likely hit. Bloom knows they need an OFer. Your whipping boy Noot will get his shot to show value and then will most likley be dealt if Baez is hitting in AAA. Baez showed signs of life lately and may adjust to AAA life by mid-season. Also, they are very high on Church. Walker will regress some, but does look like he can pan out in RF. So next season they have some OF options. You know darn well that if they trade Noot, or a catching prospect, or whomever for an OFer, it will be another young and unproven player with upside who has years of control. That is clearly what they are doing. They will lock up, Winn, JJW, maybe Burley, or whoever they consider worth retaining. They are not going to spend HUGE dollars on any player outside the system or take on such a contract. So sit back and enjoy the ride, because it is pretty clear what Bloom's marching orders are, and he is doing the best he can within the parameters laid out by ownership. He has totally revamped the development system. Keeping Marmol is a head scratcher, but we don't know everything that is going on behind the scenes. We shall see. But Keeping Donnie was not in the Cards...

Donavon is a nice player but nothing special. Look at where he ranked against all major league players last year. He drifted downward after the all star game and was hurt again. He hss been hurt a lot.

It was absolutely the right move for a retooling team to move on from him and they got some potential for him. They were never going to get any special major league talent for him. He is a good complementary player on a good team.

This view of Donavon as some sort of star is ridiculous. He is a very good and useful player for a team trying for the playoffs.

And, he is hurt again. Who knows if he would br healthy at the deadline?

Without any conformation that cannot happen for a couple years at least, Seattle overpaid
for a player. He was probably a short timer here and might be one there too.

They were set up to in the position of coming off success that they haven't had
in a while. They don't spend or they pick up Lowe so almost forced to trade if
trying to maintain the energy of 2025.

His average games played the last 3 seasons is not good.

Today is 4/23.

On 4/14, Scott had a single to center. He was later PH by Fermin.

On 4/14, Church entered the game as defensive replacement. He later hit a walk off sac fly in the 10th.

Since that point:

Scott is 0-16, 8 strikeouts, 1 stolen base (1 caught stealing). Hitting line is .000/.200/.000/.200

Church is 8-20, 1 home run, 1 double, 3 stolen bases (0 caught). Hitting line is .400/.458/.600/1.058

Quite the contrast lately

I remember calling this out before the season when some people tried to say Church was Siani. Scott is clearly Siani

At his age he really doesn't fit into what they are calling a "rebuild".

If he succeeds, he would totally fit a rebuild. Like Garcia w the Rangers.

He will be 29 July 2nd. No, he would not fit a rebuild. But keep fighting the good fight defending every move this team makes and disagreeing with every one of my posts when you are totally wrong most of the time.
