Why trade Donovan?

Because he is precisely not a player to build around. He is a complementary piece to star caliber players. The cardinals don’t have the necessary 2-3 star players to build around. If they had them, then Donovan is a no brainer extension. They don’t, so they need to consider dealing him.

Or better yet....go get those star players!

They’re going to have to develop them

That’s an iffy 50-50 proposition at best, and will keep the team low for another 3-5 years. At least. The cards organization -unless they’re able to rebuild it - has proven they CDS.

Because you have him only until the end of 2027 and lets face it, this team will not be competitive for at least 2 years. If you don't plan on making him a core player, you will lose him with little or nothing in return.

Unfortunately thats the reality. Cash in enough chips for more lottery tickets hoping you get more quality at a reasonable price later. I agree, but unfortunately at this point, he's not going to try to win with Donovan.
