As attendance/ticket sales/revenues started decreasing, they have decreased spending hand in hand. Doesn't appear they will invest another penny of their own money over "budget" to re-invest in the organization.
You are right, but it’s wrong. BDW paid 150 million for a team now valued at 2.55 billion. Where’s the reward for that? The fans consistently packed the house when they had a team they believed in and it didn’t even require a top 10 payroll. His “budget” is a self imposed number that does not cover the cost of a premium product.
Businesses have to stand on their own.
And there is ALWAYS a minimum level of Star Talent and Winning required to maintain the Revenue Stream(attendance/TV). When ownership purposely falls well under those levels and starts whining they no longer have the Revenue…..along with Cranny crying along with him……WITHOUT acknowledging this dynamic……its truly the heights of hypocrisy
Goldfan -You should probably read some of the logical and informational posts on this thread. About how things have gotten so out of balance because of media dollars. It’s a complicated problem, that the Cardinals are struggling with.
Perhaps the Dewitts and Partners should not pay themselves until they right the ship??? I think they’ll get by for a couple years don’t you??
Destroying the product and then whining about lack of Revenue to GRAND……
When you struggled at times in your career…..did you turn down your paycheck?
Did I own the team and mostly create my OWN Revenue shortfall while being a multi Billionaire with MANY OTHER INCOME SOURCES???
That’s a lame one 45…..

People whining and complaining about a private businessman….how much he should spend, how much he should earn….called a disgrace for being successful…
Here’s an idea….and listen closely…
STOP BUYING THE DAM PRODUCT!!!
I’m no fan of Dewitt…..but the guys knows the market and exploits it…and you guys just bend over and take it.
Mark my words….some of the people on this board whining about dewitt will thrill us all with their live reports from opening day…
You can’t make it stuff up..

When allocating needed money to improve the Cardinals. Isn't he a billionaire? The Dodgers spent $300 million this season on salaries. They've won the last two World Series. The Cardinals haven't even been to the playoffs for the last three seasons. DeWitt needs to put 2 and 2 together.
I’m all for spending as long as it is done WISELY.
You don’t just spend for the sake of spending!
Who do you propose they spend the $$ on?????
And now he finally has a POBO who (hopefully) will spend it wisely unlike the former POBO who wasted hundreds of millions of his payroll dollars.
Exactly, Cranny always chiming in with lower Rev…..big markets have so much money
How about not spending as STUPID as MO did for YEARS….that’s the other side of the coin. 2 sides to the financial ledger
Fowler 70mil Wasted
Carp 45Mil Wasted
Miller 39mil Wasted
MIles 50mil Wasted
Matz 36mil Wasted
And Gray at 30mil for 5’10 180 guy who can’t pitch in the heat past his 35th birthday is insane
What 2-3 actual ALL-STAR could’ve been signed to long term contracts instead of wasted on several either NO return or very little return.

No really 45……continue to equate anyone here “who earned a paycheck” to eat, own a car, live in a house, put kids through College to a Multi Billionaire who chose to buy a Civic Pro Sports entity for 75mil and its now worth 3bil……who owns several other businesses/investment firm….who has reaped massive gains over the last 25yrs from those who do “earn a paycheck” and now those same fans want the EFFORT as seen in the past OR sell the civic Pro Sports entity, move on and continue being a multi Billionaire. But please you and Cranny keep analogizing that this “business” is just like Uncle Berts tire shop on the corner…..and the poor man just needs to have enough money each week to feed his 3 kids

And that Closer, was it Holland..signed him late and cut bait too soon. May have been Matheny's last season.

Absolutely, that was probably 40mil in legacy charity contracts so old men who were mostly useless could stand on the field with their name on the back of Jersey……but the problem is the big bad Dodgers…..

Another 10mil for Holland to do NOTHING……but it’s the Dodgers Revenue Stream…..

First, Goldfan, you need to understand what operating income is. It's profit before interest expense and taxes.
Look at what the operating income is, and subtract interest expense from it. The debt is displayed by a % of value.
Use a prime rate of 7% for the interest payments. Also, the banks may require a bit of principal reduction each year.

So BDW can’t afford debt payments on the stadium……. he needed to generate more income? I don’t think the local TV contract was a factor as to whether or not BDW could afford his new stadium at the time it was built.

Bill Dewitt Jr’s cash position is irrelevant to the Cards cash position. The Cards are a corporation, and BDW has several ownership partners. The Cards revenue from tv is approximately middle of the pack. They used to have a revenue advantage from ticket sales, but that has waned over time.
Signing long term free agent contracts would and will hamstring the club with too many future financial commitments. One bad deal could tie up their finances for years.
In order to compete with the big spenders, the Cards need to draft a little better than they do, develop talent a little better than they do and assess talent a little better than they do. Incremental internal wins will add up over time to make a mid market team competitive with the big boys.

So you don't think Mets' owner. Steve Cohen, kicked in anything from his personal wealth to sign Sosa? Cohen has an estimated net worth of 21.3 Billion.

ticket sales haven’t mysteriously waned over time……the Product has Been purposefully neglected which has caused the revenue to decrease.

I once tallied it up GF, Mo wasted nearly $500M on stupid free agent signings and extensions.
