hard to say you deserve more than him.

Re: McDavid
"market setting" in general is way over rated. The salary cap sets the market and its largely based on percentages and has not changed much in 20 years far as I can tell.tfriede2 wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:33 pmBut everyone knows McDavid took a discount. Kaprizov set the market already for players not willing to take a discount. McDavid’s deal will not set the market on anything, IMO.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 14:26 pmThe best player in the game takes 12.5? That resets the salary structure.

Re: McDavid
So, if I am reading this correctly, we need McDavid to marry a STL girl in the next 2.5 years. They will have no choice but to trade him here before he becomes UFA with full intent to finish his career here. Until he has a bad game in the playoffs and Stillman pulls the deal off the table.

They could've given both Broberg & Holloway decent bridge deals for that price.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 12:00 pm $49 mil for Jake freaking Walman is absolute bat shat crazy![]()

Re: McDavid
yeah you are likely right. When a 50 point forward wants 10 million a year I'm sure no NHL team will point at McDavid.

If you'd like that answer, I'm 1000% sure that you also want to know what next former Blue defenseman will get a big contract next (after Walman and Mikola)?STL fan in MN wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 12:00 pmAnd a year ago Detroit seemingly had to attach a 2nd just to get rid of him..somni wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 11:42 amWhoa...7x7 for Jake Walman. The Average Gatsby wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 11:38 am Extending Jake Walman also. 7X7 according to Elliot Friedman.![]()

I’d still like to hear that story as to why Stevie Y wanted to get rid of Walman so badly! It just never made sense and makes even less sense now.

Re: McDavid
Good history showing that I'm not a fan of McDavid the person, but the player is the best in the world. This moved the needle a bit for me, knowing that he followed in Crosby's footsteps of taking less than market value to try and bring a championship to the team he's spent his career with. I still hope the Oilers crash and burn, but kudos to McDavid for doing his part. Will be curious to see how this impacts other "stars" taking hometown discounts when their team window is open. Don't think it will impact the overall market at all.

Lots of Panthers have made concessions to stay. Less money/more term etc because they want to keep goingTruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 18:12 pm Will be curious to see how this impacts other "stars" taking hometown discounts when their team window is open. Re: McDavid
Everyone and their Grandma knows McDavid is the best player in the league and that this is an outlier contract that will have absolutely zero effect on NHL salary structures. If he took a huge cut in pay again? Maybe. This is much ado about nuttin.

That puts it in perfect perspective. Who ever is responsible for evaluating d men on the oilers should have been fired when they flushed all that money on Nurse!

Agreed. They also have the no state tax perk in FLA, which while not the end all, be all, it helps. McDavid doing it on a Canadian team, with the economics in play, is selfless. As I said, gained a little respect for his decision.theograce wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 18:15 pmLots of Panthers have made concessions to stay. Ehh…he makes money elsewhere too. But yes, nobody wants to win more than him. He needs it to solidify his Legacy. Can’t wait to see him in the Olympics.TruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑06 Oct 2025 18:54 pmAgreed. They also have the no state tax perk in FLA, which while not the end all, be all, it helps. Re: McDavid
“when McDavid is not playing hockey, he is apparently raking in $5-6 million. This is tied on Forbes’ list for the highest off-ice income in the league with Alexander Ovechkin.
This figure is five times the amount of Nathan MacKinnon’s off-ice income of $1 million and absolutely demolishes Columbus defenceman Zack Werenski’s $200,000.”
McDavid was making money at 15.
