Having at least 2 very good starters and decent 3 and 4 starters (which they already have) along with a good setup guy and closer is the quickest way to be a real contender.
I don't see DeWitt spending for a couple upper tier starters but a team like the cardinals could be transformed quickly into a honest contender with them.
How’s it working for the Pirates? A top 10 offense is also needed. Specifically Slug. Cardinals were last in MLB
Since 2009 (16 years), the team with the #1 offense (most runs scored per game) have won the World Series 6 times. The Dodgers won last year with the #2 offense. Twice more, the #1 offensive team lost in the WS to the #3 and $6 offense. Twice more, the #1 offense lost to the WS winner in the ALCS or LDS. The other four times had Mad Bum win it for SF three times and the Royals had an all-around team, but even those teams had top 10 offenses.
Only twice in those 16 years (LA in 2020 and Cubs in 2016) has the #1 pitching staff won the WS.
The winners have averaged 9th in pitching and 5th in offense.

Brewers aren't even in the top 10 in slug. You have to have that pitching and then hopefully get a few guys that can score or drive in runs. I don't think the Cards run near enough. Also, they should use the hit and run and make contact more. Too many strikeouts. That said, they absolutely must get better pitching wise or it won't matter.
Let’s see if the Brewers win before saying that formula is the way for small markets to win a WS. I think it’s a way to be good but still fall short
That "formula" was proven in 1982. But to be honest that "formula" is baseball. Field good, pitch good, score runs by hook or crook. And that brand is much more exciting that waiting for a 3 run homer.
Today’s game is nothing like 1982 and never will be again. Reason why? 100mph fastballs. 3 hits to score is harder than having 3/9 guys with power that can change the game. That is the formula to win a WS in today’s game
Your argument is false. Get a guy on. He steals second and maybe third. A ground ball or fly ball scores him. Not to mention pitchers speed up there delivery and throw less junk when a speedy runner is on 1st or 2nd. The Brewers were 12th in slugging and yet 3rd in scoring. The Phillies were 4th in slugging and yet they scored less runs. I premise that the speed and action of the game is so much more exciting and better than the slow drum of the 3 run homer. But to say that style doesn't work is silly. That is baseball and a team like the Brewers proves that it does work. The homerun is a live by the sword die by the sword style. Speed never slumps.

Have NOT proven it works until they win the WS. The regular season is different. I am talking post season success. A top 5 slug team has won the WS consistently.

Talk about a false argument. Get a guy on. He's thrown out trying to steal second so he's erased and an out is tacked on. Chance for a big inning is over, or at least greatly reduced.
I like an aggressive team, and the new rules have made stealing bases easier, but it ain't all roses. You want to credit stolen bases with all the good things that can happen without allowing for any of the bad things.
At any rate it's not true that the Brewers run a lot and well and the Cubs don't. They both know how to go. The Cubs trailed Brewers by 3 in SB but had 18 fewer CS.
The Brewers count on pitching/defense/speed/contact. For the Cubs it's pitching/defense/speed/power. Pretty close really.

I'm not saying slug isn't important, but I am saying it's not the only way to build a team. All those teams that slug their butts off lose also. The method works. Whitey proved that point, over and over. Again, speed doesn't slump. And with the larger bases and limited pickoff attempts, someone is going to invest in speed and will be a very strong team in the future. Hopefully it'll be the Cards. Again, a single and a stolen base equals a double off the wall. It's just the double is higher rated for slug. Singles are easier to hit though. The Cards won the series with this formula and through the 80's were perennial contenders.

And my point is lack of slug has not won the WS recently and that is the goal. Build to win the WS not the NLC. Someone posed on another thread a top 5 sung has won all but 1 WS wines the year 2000 and that was KC. Certainly 29th will not do it.

I agree 29th is pitiful. But the Phillies just lost their series with LA and it wasn't lost on a homer, it was lost on a botched comebacker to the pitcher. Slug is great, but slug costs money and slug goes into slumps. Speed costs less and never slumps. Baseball is enamored with homeruns and has been since Babe Ruth, but baseball was played before Babe Ruth and there are a lot of hall of fame players that didn't rate real high on the slug scale. Ichiro recently. Nobody could say Pete Rose wasn't a game changer. Keith Hernandez was a true power hitter. etc etc. To be honest, to me the game is more exciting and more beautiful with base stealing, hit and runs and consistent pressure on the opposition. Now it's a game of sit and wait for a homerun.

Slug isn’t just homers. Brewers lead all mlb in doubles. Dodgers are 3rd in slugs at .417 and Brewers are 4th with .405 so both qualify for top 5 slug and one will be in the WS. Same on the AL side so a top 5 slugging team will win the WS again this season. Cardinals are 29 so I ask how do they achieve top 5 slug with mostly the same group next season? They don’t. This is a really bad offensive roster and all but maybe 2-3 need to go.

Sorry but the Brewers are 12th in slug. Not 4th. Still, I agree that slug is great just only for one style of game. I prefer the speed game. You can stick a bopper or two in the middle like Jack Clark but you can't have slug throughout your lineup or it would cost a king's ransom to acquire and keep. You can however afford and keep a lineup with 4 or 5 speedsters in it. More importantly is it's much easier to get hits and runners on base cause the pitcher to have to pitch from the stretch. Changing the dynamic of the pitcher. Seattle and Detroit are 10th and 11th and yet are vying for a Series berth. Neither are top 5.
