And it does no good to think that 3 Kyrous are preferred, etc. Hockey players are like wives. Why ponder if better to have 1 trophy wife, or 3 average ones, when there is only room for 1 in the house.
I believe that this salary escalation ends will end the sport of hockey. Who can afford the tickets. The fans in every town other than the Torontos, LAs, and NYs are big losers.

Re: Wild extend KK 8x17
Kaprizov had a full NMC for the entirely of his current deal. The Wild either wouldn’t have been able to trade him at all or Kap would’ve narrowed his list down to 1-3 teams and that would’ve severely impacted what they could’ve gotten in return.Sophisticated Shoes wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 12:39 pm The Wild should have traded KK for a king's ransom and kicked off the rebuild with a major tank job (btw, this is when you tank, not when the team is ascending). They have a young core with Boldy/Rossi/Faber/Buium, and they do have some talent with their prospects, but with an average age of 30.5, they are one of the oldest teams in the NHL, and outside Buium, I see the same team as last year, but a year older, and this team can't get past the 1st round. With McKenna projected 1st overall, and the bounty from trading KK and other aging players, the opportunity was there, but the Wild chose the present over their future, and that's great news for the Note!
The whining has already started on the radio here (we just got rid of Suter/Parise contracts).

Re: Wild extend KK 8x17
That represents 16.3% of the cap in the first year of the deal, and 15% in the second year. 16.3% at the start of a contract is a higher percentage than anybody else has been getting, but 15% is pretty much in line with other superstars around the league. Since the cap rising is already decided, Kaprizov's agent probably insisted that any contract should be based around the 2027-28 ceiling.
So there is definitely some sticker shock (I didn't think the Wild would go there), but by year 2 of the deal it's pretty much inline with 'standard' superstar money. The cap is just rising that much.
As for McDavid... well, back up the brinks truck. I still don't think he's breaking 20M the way some folks do, because it just makes building the rest of the team too difficult and he knows full well how problematic that is. But this certainly gives him grounds to ask for 18M per.

I don’t see this being talked about much, I just noticed that KK’s base salary will be 1M every year with all but 1M to be paid in signing bonuses on July 1st of every year.
I thought the NHL got rid of the signing bonus loophole and if so wasn’t there a limit on the total signing bonuses given out per year or per player?!

Signing bonuses *will be* capped at 60% of the player's salary going forward. It's part of the new CBA, but the policy doesn't start yet.stlblue06 wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 13:07 pm I don’t see this being talked about much, I just noticed that KK’s base salary will be 1M every year with all but 1M to be paid in signing bonuses on July 1st of every year.

That's a good contract for the Blues.
Massive overpay that will age badly from a divisional rival.

I would say KK making 17% while McDavid makes 15% absolutely represents "out of whack" Those player are not close.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 10:19 am If you assume the cap is going to hit 100 million shortly, his hit represents 17 percent of the cap. McDavid'(poop) is currently about 15 percent. Not totally out of whack and commiserate with what the MVP level player is going to receive. The larger issue in my mind is the sustainability of the cap for the smaller market teams. in other words how much is the cap rise being driven by revenues from the big market teams, and how will the smaller markets be able to come up with the coin either through filling seats, tv, etc... to be able to pay these salaries ?

It really isn't a loophole anymore. Minny still gets hit with the full 17 million cap hit.stlblue06 wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 13:07 pm I don’t see this being talked about much, I just noticed that KK’s base salary will be 1M every year with all but 1M to be paid in signing bonuses on July 1st of every year.

The thing Minny has to deal with now is they do have their top players under contract long term, but their next phase is going to to demand a lot more money.
Kaprizov is now making almost 10 million more than Faber their second highest paid. That's quite the difference in salary between #1 and #2

McDavid and Kaprizov’s current deals end on the same day. You’re comparing McDavid’s current deal to Kaprisov’s future deal. McDavid’s future deal is likely to blow it out of the water.skilles wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 14:10 pmI would say KK making 17% while McDavid makes 15% absolutely represents "out of whack" Those player are not close.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑30 Sep 2025 10:19 am If you assume the cap is going to hit 100 million shortly, his hit represents 17 percent of the cap. Re: Wild extend KK 8x17
if I were a Minnesota fan my response to this signing would be, “Great. Now what?” Because, while KK is awesome, hes not good enough to lead this franchise on his own. That’s been proven. They need more help, and if they’re signing KK to this kind of money then MN has to be going all in. That means they have to be going after other big pieces right?
Otherwise, this is a waste of $136m.

Re: Wild extend KK 8x17
Just like a lot of these kinds of contracts, going to look really bad on the back end. I don't care if the cap goes up - there is still a cap.
If I was a Wild fan though and they win just one cup in his tenure it will be worth it for them. I just don't see it happening.
