Why on would you have Pallante as an opener after he just allowed 5 in the 1st? To the Pirates? Not that it makes any difference at this point.

OK. So signing Harper is your answer. Only two problems:
1) You realize that Harper had to agree? Minor point. He said no to the Dodgers and Cubs, but I'm sure you could have convinced him.
2) You had to convince BDW to sign him to the 13-year contract - the largest in MLB history at the time. He's less than 6 years into that deal.

And it's a big jump to say that IF they did that, they would not have made the Ozuna trade.


PS - "Years ago" is convenient. In the past few years, you didn't mention it again?

A bullpen start every 5th day is not realistic. The guys we have are already struggling to cover innings. They need to be less used, not more.

Not what I would do if I had to work under DeWitt. If you're going to restrict on one hand then you have to give some latitude on the other.

Not to mention they wouldn't have had to go out and get stiffs like Mikolas, Lynn, Gibson, etc with Alcantra and Gallen having cost controlled years.

Scherzer would have been an obvious pickup.

First, how do you fix it now?
Second, welcome to reality. The Harper deal wasn't a reality for the Cards. And repeating it doesn't make it a reality.
Third, everyone regrets the Ozuna trade in 2019, but you can't convince us you were outspoken against it at the time. Guess who was the top prospect the Cards gave up for him?

Not with the limitations DeWitt has placed. Those will make this at best a three more year run of mediocrity. Curious though what your fixes are?

I see a lot of requests to call people up to take spots. After McGreevy there is next to nothing that is worthy of calling up pitching wise.

Three or four who were looked at as options to fill in are injured. Calling up Matthews would be a massive mistake. He has struggled at Triple A most of the season. He put together two really good games (saw both and was hoping he was turning it anround) and then struggled again. He is not ready and rushing him could be a large setback. I saw Wilkerson mentioned. He isn’t the solution to anything even short-term.


Fixing this is going to take Bloom packaging good young talent for pitching. It’s not going to be Noot that gets it. It’s going to take a package around players like Herrera, Crooks, Winn. Not saying all of them, but those type players.

Mo is leaving this organization at a level of rot not seen since the early 90s.

The caveat to that is Curtis Taylor at Memphis, that 3dender mentioned above. The reason they haven't summoned him yet is that he's not on the 40-man roster.

As has been mentioned in other situations, the 40 man should not be an issue. There are multiple people on it that could easily come off. Its a lame excuse being used by the lazy front office.

The biggest problem is we have two genuine bozos making this decision. The same two numbskulls that forgot to call the bullpen to get someone warmed up a few weeks ago. And the same two who have guided this mess. I wouldn't be surprised if their brilliant solution was to move Pallante to the bullpen and name him the opener every 5th day.
