Don't know anything about the second pitcher in this trade but if Molina can stay healthy(which has been an issue) and stay in shape(which causes a lot of his issues going back to his Texas Tech days) he has the talent to be a solid 3-5 SP in MLB.

Maton has been good. Did cards ever discuss what extension would cost as they need same type next year and also another guy to replace helsley.
I'm sure Bloom has a very good idea what an extension looks like. But why extend him when you can get a couple of prospects and re-sign him in the off-season?
Not to mention, he has every bit as good a chance (or more) of being terrible next year than he does repeating this year. Such is the case for journeyman relievers.
Some decent points, but they guys you have you know if they have underlying injuries, is a plus.
True.
Also, since you can't tamper with your own player, the two sides could have already talked contract before the trade.
'Glad we're on the same page as far as what a future contract looks like for you. We'll be in touch in November. Good luck in the playoffs!'
Seems I never moved past Mo's total idiocy of Jordan Walden, trading for him, knowing injured, extending the contract before he ever throws a pitch even though he was under contract for the upcoming season, only to find him totally damaged goods and complete waste of money.

WE GOT MOLINA!!!!
Oh wait LHP Mason Molina
And RHP Skyler Hales
Well….this should generate some ticket sales by The People’s Temple…
I think with the Correa move you may have lost your license today
Not my favorite move…….but the club is aggressive…if occasionally misguided…
and I appreciate the effort..

I have to ask again if this return is really better than giving a QO and him signing elsewhere.
Truly feels like they moved these guys just to move them.
Would you give
Helsley or Matz or Maton
a QO?
I'm pretty sure the QO is $21.4M no matter who you are, so that's a big NO. What if they took it!
Of course not.
Mo only got rid of rentals. He left Bloom plenty of chips to mix and match anyway he can imagine doing.
What he got back looks like a grab bag of a few pitchers along with 1 young position player that is now the Cards #6 prospect and a power bat that Bloom was previously intrigued with.
The offseason allows for more changes. Sept call ups.
Not exciting for sure. Much rather be buyers.
But but now Bloom gets to do the buying with both chips and money in his pocket.

Sometimes that type of thing works out, ie. Chris Carpenter.
Mo is far past his sell by date and needs to go, but...
When he won't take a chance he gets roasted (see at least half the posts on the board today) and when he takes a chance and it doesn't work out he gets roasted. The very nature of taking a risk is that it doesn't always end the way we'd like.
He took a risk (albeit a modest one) on Maton this season. Worked out pretty well. Low cost, high production, some return, opportunity to re-acquire. Had Maton crashed and burned, it would have been a never-ending chorus of 'Mo screwed the pooch again!'

I'm as PO'd about this deadline as anyone, but there's absolutely NO way you QO Maton.
I love Phil. I hate to see him go. I want him to come back. But under no circumstances do I want to pay him 20+ million dollars.
Haha no I know. Just can't believe this is the best we could do for these guys. Really disappointing last couple days.
Another example of Cardinal fans thinking that our middle of the road players are worth a top 5 prospect. That will never change. We all want the best, but hey, we have to be reminded of the reality of what the true value is of so-so players on expiring contracts.

Yeah no kidding. Just another in a long line of mistakes and blunders made by Mo. No reason for the extension in that situation complete idiocy.

Waiting til the last second and that's the best return Mo could get? Pretty underwhelming with how good Maton has been this year and what relievers have been returning this deadline. Classic Mo deadline playing it safe.
Let’s keep it in perspective. Maton is a guy who couldn’t find a job until spring training. He had a good season, but he never profiled as a guy we were going to get a big return for.
The Hale guy sounds like a legit Bullpen candidate next year and a potential future closer.
Doubt the Molina player sees the majors ever for the Cards. Guessing either depth for minors or traded as part of a package down the road.
I would try to sign Maton this off season.
For me the biggest miss was not dealing Romero who would have more value.
Romero is coming back. Big dif!

Romero would have brought more back based on not being a pending free agent.

Maton has been criminally underrated in the market for several years because he doesn’t throw hard. There’s a reason he got his for $2m this year. He was good in 2024 too. Kinda hope we bring him back this offseason.

This looks like your standard bland Moe the clown 'quantity over quality' special.
I really hate this guy
No, it looks like your standard this is what you get for a 32 year old journeyman middle reliever special. Not sure why anyone would expect much more.
I get that, but Moe lacks creativity, he could have easily packaged Maton and Nootbaar for a top 10-15 at least. Just more mediocre bleh, which is his specialty
You lack originality. I can always count on you to state something negative.

Nope. No one said top 5.
I'd have taken a guy who was maybe about ready to be a MLB/AAA tweener along with a lotto ticket and been pretty fine.
Every guy we got has some potential along with some serious downsides. We may never hear from even a single one of them again. Ok we will probably hear from Blaze.

Look around. That's the market for relievers. Ain't no one getting what you're asking. The Duran trade, maybe, but I've read a bunch of people saying that the Twins got screwed in that deal. And he was younger, better, and had more control than any of our guys.

Read in one of the Maton trade stories that the Cardinals also received $250,000 for international signing bonus monies.
Woohoo ! Didn't see that in the initial reports.
