You could be right. I don't know. I do know that after the trade, especially when Edman was going on his heater with LA and Fedde had a lot of people complaining that the league figured him out, his performance with the White Sox was a fluke and he'd come back to earth. If posters around here thought that, I'm sure there were a few teams with the same thoughts as well.

I agree. It was a good trade at the time. Edman was hurt all year. We desperately needed pitching and a RH bat, and we ended up getting both out of the deal.

You could say that he should have not tried to compete that year and tried to see if he could've gotten a good prospect out of the deal instead of Fedde and Pham, but who knows if the move still goes through if that's the ask.

We got two guys who are so-so but at least they filled needs! Until one was cut a few weeks later because he actually does suck. And the other couldn't last one full season because he also actually sucks.

Your criteria--and mine--for what constitutes an effective GM and DeWitt's are quite different.

Same here. Mel said keeping him and Helsley was easy obvious and correct though said cards could win and their trade value would be higher at the deadline lol

I was a Tommy Edman fan.

I always felt he was underrated here and was a fan of his. With that said I understood dealing him as he was out and we had similar pieces, just had major concerns on Fedde. I am big on track records and Fedde lacked a consistent one.

You see brock here knows more than the other 29 GMs/POBOs in MLB - those guys had no idea, not even an inkling that Fedde was what brock saw, so we would have got a straight up HAUL of prospects.

Nobody is saying that. He was an inexpensive risk. If he pitches close to what he had done, he's a steal. At worst, he is a limited risk. He flames out and you have only 3M left and no years left. Thats enough to toss a mid level team prospect and maybe a lottery ticket at.

That's most of the reality.

The Cards are extremely thin with SP. There's McGreevy, Matz, then a couple others and it's not like Libs, Pallante, or Miles
are some absolute knowns quantities. They have also been extremely fortunate to this point with health. Extremely.

Fedde, even with the hindsight POV, brought developmental time to the organization for those pitchers. He looks less valuable
now because he wasn't needed so much when no injuries occurred. He was probably going to be gone in a week anyway.
The miss with Fedde is whatever prospect he'd bring back a maybe something vs nothing.
