Chiming in to this quality dialogue .
An OF with a cannon impacts games sometimes multiple times when he doesn't make an impact throw .
Ex. When I was young and Cardinals would play the Pittsburgh Pirates , the following scenarious would happen:
A. Cardinals have runner on 2nd .. hard hit single to right to Clemente . Third base coach holds up STOP sign immediately on the runner holding him at
Note: Even with 2 outs, where usually the coach will chance it , they aren't going to risk Clemente throwing him out by 7 ft.
B. Runner on 3d with 0 or 1 out ... Fly ball or liner to Clemente .. Coach does not send the runner after tagging up. Runner may bluff going down the line 10 or 15 ft. but he would quickly retreat as ball would be fired accurately to home. A Pop Warner is not going to challenge Clemente arm .
So sometimes an OF with a cannon doesn't even have to throw the ball and save runs for his team.
Still remember a play at Busch where a Cardinal guy hit a ball into RF corner . Batter was flying to get a triple . Clemente from the corner throws the ball on a line _Frozen rope ..all the way on a fly to the 3rd baseman with the ball landing in his glove right on the base . Runners foot is only 6 inches from the bag but tagged out. It was one of those OMG ! I can't believe what I just saw ! type moments. Clemente was slight build but what a whip for an arm.
Here is a sample of the stuff I saw as a kid when we went to Pirate/Cardinal games.
