both are top 25 prospects. Conrad is transfer from Butler.
Thru 4 innings today :

Marek Houston, WF, SS ~ 2-2, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 Runs, 2 BB

Ethan Conrad, WF, 3B ~ 1-2, RBI, 3 Runs, 2 BB

Demon Deacons have a 12 run lead in the bottom of the 5th, I think the benches will be emptied shortly. That should be it for Houston and Conrad today.

There was alot of chatter this offseason about the improvements Houston made with his bat. If these early returns are any signs of what's to come, he could flirt with 1/1. He's a plus defender at short and has plus speed. Scouting reports last year said he could start in the majors on speed and defense alone.
the competition will get significantly better come March 1st, with a mini-expo weekend in Winston-Salem. Princeton and Maryland will play 2 each vs. Wake Forest. The following the weekend, the true test, as ACC play opens up vs. Notre Dame. I'm not downplaying Marist this weekend, nor Marek's improvement with the bat, but I think we should measure the changes in March.

But he's definitely on a lot teams radars... especially after the 3 HR weekend.

Side note, Billybaseball, and anyone else... what's your draft strategy with the 5th pick, then 3 picks from 50-90??? I know "BPA" is the mantra that most like to say....but everyone has to have a wish list, or a threshold they're comfortable with.

Me, personally, I'd like the best College Arm/Bat available at #5, then I'd feel extremely comfortable going the Brewers/Marlins route of High End/On the fence Highschool Picks with the next 3 picks. Use our draft money and go big.

If we had several picks in the 30's, then I'd change my approach a bit, probably draft up the college kids that fell out of the first round. Those will likely be gone by the time have our 2nd pick in the 50's
It's tough to say right now. I'd probably stay away from preps unless Hernandez is there and has a transcendent season. Holliday falls comfortably out of the top 10 for me. College baseball is turning into a much more competitive environment than before so we'll see who rises to the top. Big fan of Cannarella but he'll have to show more pop to go at 5. Summerhill and Arquette could be a player at 5 too. Haven't seen enough of Bremner yet to see him at 5 and I highly doubt Arnold makes it that far. But there are a few other college pitchers who could work their way up. Only special pitchers are worthy of top 10 selections though and I only see Arnold and Hernandez as being worthy as of now. Fangraphs new board has Wehiwa Aloy as their #2 ranked prospect and a couple of other outliers in their top 20. So we may see some wild variance in scouting lists this year

Note ~ I compiled the opening weekend stats for the consensus Top 40-50 college players....pulled from 4 draft boards....covers Top 100-125 prospects. I have no HS players listed. 90% haven't started their season, so there's no use listing them at this time.

I had this done yesterday and saved, was ready to post this morning, but I realized I didn't list how the players bat...when I got home a few hours ago, I went back and entered in their Batting Side (LHB or RHB or S-BOTH). If I missed 1 or 2, I apologize

Also, the reason for the long list: we have 4 picks in the first 90 on day 1 of the draft. These names will likely be picked on Day 1 of the draft....some will fall out, but most will stick.

Enjoy. I'll try to update this once a month, and if I missed anyone, or if there's a player or 3 you want me to track on here, I will definitely do it. :D

Nice work Crav. I have a question. What are your thoughts on Pierce Coppola? He had one of the most dominant starts I saw. 12 K’s in 5 innings with 2 base runners given up vs Air Force. Looks like he’s had injury issues, maybe healthy?

34. J.D. Thompson, LHP Vanderbilt ~ 4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K

Nice work Crav. I have a question. What are your thoughts on Pierce Coppola? He had one of the most dominant starts I saw. 13 K’s in 5 innings with 2 base runners given up vs Air Force. Looks like he’s had injury issues, maybe healthy?
Multiple back injuries. He had surgery for bulging disc in his back in 2022 after only 1 start, and then I think he didn't play at all in 2023 b/c he hurt his back again in Fall Practice leading up to the 2023 season. Basically his Freshmen and Sophomore years were wiped out.

Midweek starter last year for the Gators in 2024...I think? Maybe he was Saturday's starter, but I don't recall him pitching on the weekends. He had...7 to 9 starts last year? Probably have to count that as a rehab year.

13 K's against any competition is insane. Big guy, too.

@FGM2..I just looked it up, he DID pitch on Saturday's...he replaced the Gator's Saturday starter in late March.

and a scouting report from 2022ish.... 92mph fastball, which he commands well. Fringe sweeper.

that's 3 years ago...he's probably better now

his teammate Liam Peterson threw 6 IP, 11 K shutout. I don't think he's draft eligible until 2026

Marek Houston, SS, Wake Forest, RHB ~ 0-4, K
Ethan Conrad, CF, Wake Forest, LHB ~ 0-2, 2 PO/CS, 2 BB

Wake Forest mustered 2 hits vs. UNC-Greensboro today. Coming off 4 games in 3 days, off on Monday, I think they're were a bit tired to kick off the season.

-------

UNC over Kansas State on Tuesday.

Luke Stevenson, C, UNC, LHB ~ 2-5, 2 Singles, 3 RBI, 1 Run

some early Friday performances, and we had some gems thrown today, Bremner was not one of them.

~ Tyler Bremner, RHP, UCSB ~ 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K...vs. Seattle University.
~ Kyson Witherspoon, RHP, OU ~ 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 12 K...vs. Minnesota....21 K's in 2 starts...arguably the 5th best pitcher on draft boards entering the season, was one of my pitchers to watch
~ Logan Lunceford, RHP, WF ~ 5 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 13 K...vs St. Johns....Lunceford is a Mizzou transfer. Pitched poorly for 2 seasons at Mizzou, but lit up the Cape Cod league for 3 starts this summer, transferred to WF and is their Ace (Friday Night Starter)
~ Liam Doyle, LHP, Tennessee ~ 5 1/3, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 14 K.....a very nice 25 K: 1 BB ratio in 2 starts....RS Junior, has transferred every summer....Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Tenn

~ Dean Curley, SS, Tenn ~ 2-4, 2 Singles, Run, BB
~ Gavin Kilen, 2B, Tenn ~ 1-1, Single, Run, 3 BB
~ Ike Irish, C, Auburn ~ 1-3, Single, Run, RBI, BB, K
~ Max Belyeu, RF/DH, Texas ~ 1-3, Single, Run, BB, K

a few players still playing:

Jamie Arnold, LHP, FSU ~ 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Marek Houston, SS, WF ~ 1-4, Single, K
Ethan Conrad, CF, WF ~ 0-1, Run, 2 BB
Cam Cannarella, CF, Clemson ~ 0-4, 2 K

David Shaw with the 5 IP piggy back last night. I guess Cal likes Turkington starting more than Shaw...at the moment. Turkington with a rough 6 run, 4 inning effort. Shaw gave up a few walks over 5 innings, but only 1 hit to run his total on the year to 3.

Last night ~ 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K...1 WP, 1 HBP

season total ~ 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 13 K

tall, imposing LHP....6'6"

-----

@FGM2... tell Woody to let him start next Friday :D

As it's shaping up right now, the Cardinals, at #5, are in line for Bremmer, Hernandez or Cannarella.
Thanks for the specific, focused insight. It is really lacking usually in these draft threads filled by sheep and their cut-n-paste laziness.
