BrummerStealsHome wrote: 12 Feb 2024 11:48 am Jeffries did very well here, but left as a FA for the same money the Cards were offering, but with a No Trade clause. The Cardinals wouldn't do it, and I can't say that I blame them. Losing Jeffries set a train in motion that saw Zeile moving from 3rd to first, so he could prove he couldn't field at either position, trading for home town boy Scott Cooper to play third, giving up Hard Hittin' Mark Whiten and Rheal Cormier. They stunk in '95, but '96 brought new owners, a new manager, and new players . . . and winning.
I really find the Cardinals' post-Jack Clark situation at first base fascinating. They bungle the negotiations with Clark, which leads to them getting Horner in the final days of his career. Then they get Pedro Guerrero in the last years of his career (whom I loved as a kid), then one year of Andres Galarraga before he resurrects his career in Colorado, then Gregg Jefferies (who is easily the best Cardinals performer in this bunch), before we get John Mabry/Todd Zeile for a few years (yikes!), then the mid-'90s version of a Cardinals top prospect in Dmitri Young (remember him?!?), then McGwire arrives.
