On this date in 1967, the Cardinals named Stan Musial their general manager. Unsurprisingly, he led the Cardinals to a championship in his lone season at the helm …

The Cardinals dragged their feet in negotiations. Good summary here:

https://www.stlredbirds.com/2021/12/21/ ... yankees-2/

I don't know if it was the Post-Dispatch of KMOX, but one of those two polled St. Louis sports fans as to which was the bigger loss, Clark to the Yankees or the Gridbirds to Phoenix, and the fans chose the former!
What a strange negotiation. The link says he took less to sign with the Yankees. I would of thought Maxvill would have made more of an effort to keep him. And he still had to pay Clark a chunk of money that was in a clause that was equivalent to the loan. Apparently, both sides had been trying to get a deal done for 3 years prior. Clark wasn't happy in NY. He declined that year. And his absence left a big hole at 1B.
Didn't the Cardinals raise all ticket prices $1 in order to re-sign Jack? I remember seeing an interview with Whitey talking about it. The Rat really wanted Jack back in StL. Instead, he got Bob Horner who lasted all of a month.

I don't remember much about the '80s. That's why I like this thread. I often learn something new. There was a clause in the contract that paid Clark $250000 if he signed somewhere else. Which was the same as paying him the loan he wanted. What did Maxvill see in Horner? He did later deal for Guerrero that year. Who was decent for a few years. Herr was traded for Brunansky right after the start of the next year.
Horner had been dang good in Atlanta for years. The collusion by the owners in '87, forced him to play in Japan for a year. He hit 30 or so homers there. We needed a 1b, and signed him in '88.

His hr numbers were puny compared to every other season. But he was on a 100 rbi pace when his season ended with an injury in June.

A little less than four years before John Stuper won Game 6 of the 1982 World Series, the Cardinals obtained him in a minor-league trade that wasn’t even mentioned in either the St. Louis Post-Dispatch or the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette …

More than 43 years after he helped the St. Louis Cardinals win their first World Series championship, Jesse Haines was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee at age 76.

The trade to obtain Jack Clark may have taken longer than anyone would have liked, but in the end, the Cardinals had the middle-of-the-order slugger they needed to capture two National League championships.

BrummerStealsHome wrote: 30 Jan 2024 09:40 am Haines is an underrated Cardinals. When all-time pitchers names come up Gibby and Dean lead the way, as they should, but Pop Haines should be right there with them.

Even more interesting, we talk all the time about, "Oh, the Cardinals can't afford this guy or that guy," and we know that technically they could afford it, they just don't want to. When the Cardinals purchased the rights to Pop Haines, they literally couldn't afford him. Branch Rickey had to go to the Board of Directors for permission to take out a $10,000 loan for Haines' rights, making him the first big signing in franchise history.
