Granillo-heads coming out of the woodwork!!
Granillo did have a 4.71 ERA/1.38 WHiP/7.7 SO9................last guy in the pen' type reliever.
He's another "meh", so it's a "meh" for another "meh" trade.
Rock, that's lazy stat grabbing my friend.
Granillo only pitched in like 14 games and like 21 innings. Hard to use those stats to judge the guy.
Look at Granillo's minor league #'s. 12.2 K/9, which is more than the guy we got. Plus Granillo has closed before and has late inning experience in the minors.
Seems like he was on the uptick.
Disappointed in this trade, at least on its face.
Minor league stats are meaningless if they don't translate to MLB, lazy on your part to site them my friend.
He's a "meh", back of the bench reliever who had his cup of coffee who wasn't going to make the Cardinals opening day roster.
Soriano could be the same guy but he does have better MLB strikeout potential and that's what Bloom is going for, power pitching.
Minor league track records are far more valuable than a 21 inning stint in the majors. That's an very small sample size. Hardly reliable. Granillo has the makeup to be a strong reliever.
The guy we got, from what I can tell so far, is not any better. If he is out of options, he also will lock in a bullpen spot, which I prefer to have flexibility in throughout the season.

This seems like an odd trade to me.
Thought Granillo had a lot of potential. Soriano's numbers don't look that spectacular.
Anyone see what we are missing here?
young guy with potential for older guy (a few years) whose #s last year were poor.
agree, head scratching trade but there's no doubt stuff we don't know.
I bet the Cards like the strike out per inning.
Granillo averaged 12.2 K/9 in the minors.
He is younger. Has experience closing.
I don't get this at all.
I don't either. Clearly something obscure....
I just read Goold's article on the PD hoping there was something additional.
nope, straight one for one swap.
I bet they targeted the higher spin rate of Soriano. Banking on their staff to harness that arm, guess we'll see:
George Soriano
George Soriano features high-spin pitches, highlighted by a slider averaging over 2,800 RPM and a four-seam fastball in the 2,400+ RPM range (reaching ~97 mph). His arsenal also includes a changeup with roughly 1,700 RPM. The slider is noted for producing significant whiffs.
Key 2024-2025 spin rate data for Soriano:
Slider: ~2806 RPM (avg. 85.3 mph)
Four-Seam Fastball: ~2404 RPM (avg. 96.8 mph)
Changeup: ~1699 RPM (avg. 88.7 mph)
Andre Granillo
Andre Granillo's 2025 MLB debut highlighted a high-spin arsenal, featuring a slider with over 2,200-2,300 RPM and a four-seam fastball exceeding 2,300 RPM. His breaking pitch shows significant, consistent movement, averaging 84-85 mph, while his fastball sits in the 94-96 mph range.
Pitch-by-Pitch Data (2025 Season)
Based on MLB.com video analysis and Baseball Savant data:
Slider (approx. 65% usage): ~2269–2298 RPM (Avg. 84.4–85.5 mph).
Four-Seam Fastball (approx. 28% usage): ~2383 RPM (Avg. 94.6–95.8 mph).
Sinker/Changeup: Limited usage, with sinkers measured around 95 mph.

Traded a two-pitch guy for a three-pitch guy (not that any of the pitches have been particularly effective). Spin rates look encouraging though

The Nationals and Cardinals announced a one-for-one swap of righty relievers. St. Louis acquires George Soriano while Washington picks up Andre Granillo. Washington placed righty Trevor Williams on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Nationals had designated Soriano for assignment last week when they claimed lefty Ken Waldichuk off waivers, so they needed to open a 40-man spot for Granillo. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the trade shortly before the announcements.
Huh. Wonder what they were thinking here. Granillo seemed to have some promise.
Soriano can throw hard and strike guys out and assuming they want to see if they can cut his walks down and make him a serviceable BP guy. Granillo won't be missed. This is likely nothing for nothing.

Had a brain cramp in my prior comments on Granillo and the plus changeup—I was thinking of Gastelum, not Granillo. So never mind. Sorry about that.

We would definitely have a problem if they traded Gastelum for him.

Temporary short-circuit—a minor league closer with a 3-syllable name that starts with a “G” triggered the wrong synapses . . .

Saw and talked to Granillo on the Cardinals caravan. He was excited about the upcoming season. Said he was really nervous at times pitching for St. Louis, but expected to be more relaxed this year having had that experience last year. He is a high leverage reliever who still has “ Options” left. Soriano has no options left and will be gone by April! Stupid move by Bloom, no other way to sugar coat it! But of course there are those who think he can do no wrong!

Live up to your name. Fired Up! Can't make this trade a personal affront. Practically no player plays on the same team for the entirety of his career like before. This is just his turn and probably not his last. Teams play with who they have when their season starts. That is the only certainty.

Just don't let Soriano face any LH hitters.
.229 .331 .351 .682 RHB vs Soriano
.294 .370 .603 .973 LHB vs Soriano
According to
Brian Walton, Soriano is first cousins with seven-time Major League All-Star Alfonso Soriano.

Being that he was picked up so many times on waivers with no options may be foretelling. They might know something others don't, like maybe he was pitching with an injury (I have no idea) or there is something they see that is an easy fix. But the Cardinals probably know him pretty well with sharing the spring training facility with the Marlins. He was also picked up by all teams that were ahead of the Cardinals in the waiver process. The fact that they traded for him now seems like a head scratcher, but he may be someone that they've had their eye open for.

Granillo parked his car in BDW Jr spot in Jupiter.
That's a no no!
