Goold's reply :

The Cardinals do not share your opinion based on their answers over and over again when this has been asked and discussed. Manager Oli Marmol probably had the most detailed explanation of it -- and he didn't limit the answer to Walker, but used Walker as an example. He said what Walker needed to work on, what adjustments he needed to make were not going to happen in the minors because he's not going to face the same kind of competition and demands at that level. He could succeed without change and thus reinforce just staying status quo, rather than being challenged to adjust, to improve, etc. at the major-league level.

t's also part of why you're going to sense some urgency from Walker and the Cardinals about his place with the team. He only has one option year remaining. He's on the brink of arbitration eligibility. These two things really put a clock on the Cardinals getting the most from him and him finding a spot with the team. Yes, that's in the major-league lineup. And, yes, the Cardinals are advertising that he's going to get that opportunity. They're not out of the runway era just yet.
I read through this again…..So apparently JW is so good at AAA that he needs to play in MLB next season #4….so he can show every one once again that he can’t hit ML pitching. How many fellas through history were AAA players and never made it in MLB?? But with JW…..we just don’t believe it and need to see it for a forth year before we’re convinced…..Because this revolutionary Relaxing Muscles at the plate awakening will prove the magic fix….until ‘27

This tells me there are no intentions of acquiring a decent OF bat. There will be nothing to do with Walker if he struggles again in 2026. If he and Gorman both bomb next season, it will be painful to watch.

I love Arenado. He was one of my favorite players before we traded for him. And I still like watching him play 3B still. It’s a thing of beauty. But that’s about all I like seeing him do at this point, and I hate to say that. And I’m selling him no matter what this off-season and expect nothing back, even if we eat a bunch of money. It’s the right thing to do.
agree RD.
he was a highlight reel player at 3B.
sad his best days are behind him.
If the choice is skillet-hands Gorman who can’t hit either vs. Arenado, I’ll take Arenado every day.
By 2028 they should have a solid replacement.

Gorman ain’t it IMO.

Gosh, Marmol is an idiot! Sure, using that philosophy with Walker sounds good in theory. Problem is he hasnt succeeded, really, at the AAA level. The part about "he could go back and succeed without change" is not based in reality. This is another reason Marmol hasn't a clue!
Exactly. It's just not a true statement to say "he could succeed without change" in AAA... there's no evidence that he is capable of doing that since he has literally never done it. A truly delusional line of thinking from guys earning a ton of money to make these decisions.
they dimed walker and said he didnt do the work of thoroughly studying all the relief pitchers the first day of a series etc, yet they reward this by leaving him in MLB. I say leave him in AAA until he kicks the door down into MLB with work ethic and results.

Agree. I've posted several times about Walker not having great success at AAA - in parts of three seasons there with 529 PAs - .257/.331/.414/.745.
He needs to prove he can hit there.
+1 to both

And what a great job Oli and his gang who can't shoot straight have done w/him at the major league level.

He needs to start at Memphis and stay there until he dominates AAA pitching, only then is he recalled.

I have been in the “Walker needs to start next year in AAA” camp for awhile now, but I’ve heard DG and others explain the team’s thinking, and I do understand where they are coming from. I wish the team hadn’t promoted him so early in the first place, but they did and no one can change that. Who knows if it would have made a difference either way, though. I guess he’s here now and they believe that it’s sink or swim time and it has to be done at the MLB level. They need to figure it out now and see if he’s going to be part of their long term plans, so I guess that’s where it needs to happen.

Walker must be aware that he is on the fence. If ever that saying applies Walker is it.

Under that level of pressure, it is gonna be a fight to succeed. Mental at the minimum.

If you send him to AAA and he kills, so what. I’ve read it here, that the difference between triple A and MLB is to great to correlate. Doesn’t guarantee success.

He’d be better served with a better game plan pet at bat- look and hit the first pitch fastballs, lay off the late count sweepers.

When that happens, pitchers will then adjust to him. Then you’ll know he has arrived.

No kidding. Gorman at 3rd is scary. Unless they get something strong I hope they keep Nado.

WC I think is a better idea to trade. He can probably fetch you more ina trade and they have players who can hold down first.

Gorman may be a net negative to the team if he is forced to play 3rd. He is not good there.

He and Gorman had projectable power ceilings. Teams want that desperately. They don't want to give up on them despite the evidence that it may be a pipe dream. I'm fine holding on to Walker -- just not at the MLB level.
