However I would be surprised if he would want a deal with Cards. He is looking for the chance to reprove himself. Role with Cardinals would be spot position. Fitting into rotation at times, bull pen role at other times. If he does ok trade at deadline possibly.
I agree, mostly, though I would offer him less money.

Tell MM he is starting the season in the bullpen, but will be treated as a swingman.

I seriously doubt though that MM is looking for a chance to reprove himself. He probably has the most starts in mlb the last 3 years.

But…he might be interested in proving himself as a reliever (see Cal Eldred). And like you said, possibly flip him at the deadline.
Yep. I agree with you guys for the most part. I don't like Mikolas. I was sick of him a few years ago. But, a Mikolas-type pitcher is more than likely who they are going to sign anyway. With the rotation very uncertain and full of young players, you're going to need a journeyman or two who can give you innings. If Mikolas ends up one of those guys, and it is the right kind of deal, I am okay with it.

But like you said, I think any pitcher you bring in has to understand that they aren't guaranteed a spot in the rotation. That they should be expected and willing to take a spot in the bullpen whenever the team needs him to.

If you can get a younger reclamation guy with some better upside for about the same price, then I would probably prefer him signed over Mikolas, but I don't think we're going to have free agents beating down our door for next year.
