he would make easy catches, turn into run into wall, fall, get up, act like you caught it at wall, when you were at a light jog, caught it 10 feet from wall, and then went into dramatics.

Jimmy Piersall was my choice, too. Although I’m not sure he was a hot dog. Many said he was simply mentally ill. When he hit his 100th career HR he ran the bases backwards, facing backwards. You’ve probably never seen that before. He was quite the head case.

Seems like we’re bulking “loose cannons” together with hot dogs… in that case, I’m not sure anyone could compare to Rube Waddell.

I didn't know much about Piersall until 1958. He was playing at Comiskey Park against the White Sox and started to "do the twist" during the game.
The guy was a nut case but he was entertaining. People in Chicago loved it.
Piersall was a riot when he teamed with Harry Caray in the booth in the 1970's.
