Not after game 1. Just the day after 23-man rosters are due, which is always before the first game.
Similarly, anyone putting together a Blues initial 23-man roster that doesn’t include Krug will end up incorrect.
Please elaborate!
Army has made it clear in interviews that they plan to place Krug on in-season LTIR, which has more Cap advantages than placing him on off-season LTIR. This means they plan on him counting on the initial 23-man roster they have to submit by 5pm (Eastern) the day before the regular season starts (I think this is Oct 6 but don’t care enough to verify). Teams can then place players on LTIR as soon as the very next day.
For the Blues, this would allow them to push themselves up against the Cap as close as they can go. This would allow them to maximize their LTIR pool. The salary cap this season is $95.5M. If Army is able to put together a 23-man roster that adds up to precisely $95.5M, he can then place Krug on LTIR the next day and have Krug’s full $6.5M AAV added to the LTIR pool. Army would then be able to spend that $6.5M at some point this season. As another example, let’s say he puts together a roster that adds up to $93.5M, counting Krug. He’d be $2M away from the Cap still. You can only utilize LTIR by the amount it puts you over the Cap. So in that scenario, they’d only get $4.5M of Krug’s $6.5M in the LTIR Pool.
All this to say that Army will be putting together a 23-man roster that will by design be as close to the 95.5M Cap as he can get. This may result in waiver exempt players like Snuggerud, Mailloux and Dvorsky to technically be sent to the minors as a part of the initial 23-man roster. It happens every year and fans here cry and moan because they don’t understand the Cap. For the same reasons, even if the Blues do end up deciding they want to part with one or both of Texier or Joseph, I don’t expect it to be before the 23-man roster is set because they’d want those higher salaries to count so they can get as close to the $95.5M max as possible. They can then call up Snuggy, Mailloux etc and place others on waivers the next day. We did this the last couple years with Neighbours. I recall last year he wasn’t on the 23-man roster and tons of people complained about it…and then he was recalled the next day. It’s just math and Cap maneuverings at play.
Yup. Right now they are about $625k and change below the cap. Not seeing how they get much closer than that, but it’s possible. And until they need the LTIR space, they can simply keep Krug on the 23 man roster, but on regular IR, so they stay right against the cap. I could be wrong, but cap accrual occurs when a team is under the cap and does NOT use LTIR. Seems that is where the Blues are headed as they can open the season with the current 14 forwards, 7 Defenseman (includes Kessel and Mailloux) and 2 goalies. Krug can be on regular IR and Kessel takes his spot on the 23 man roster.

Gotcha.
Thank you for making the complicated simple enough for even someone like me to understand!

I hope he does come back for the playoffs for Vegas.
An in-shape Pietrangelo who was conditioned all season really has been a non-factor for them in the playoffs.
Imagine a "sat at home all winter eating pasta all day" Pietrangelo joining them for the playoffs. Woof.

He was on half a leg last year and still their best dman in the playoffs.

You bring up some good points. Probably why it's more of a play or retire scenario rather than a comeback late scenario. What we learned about Petro is that if given the chance not to practice, he won't. It would be hard to imagine he would be putting in the time it takes to be a NHL ready playoff performer when he has been given that option before, and chose to not pick up a stick.
That being said, I already posted in another thread that guys like him are totally capable of being good for 7-25 hockey games. It's a different animal to just be good enough to handle a small load of a season when everyone else has put the wear in tear on their body.

Why the cheap shots?
Guy is closer to 36 than 37, yet played 71 games last year and has averaged 72 the past four seasons. What's more, he's averaged .57 points per game; a much younger Petro averaged .59 in St. Louis.

He’s a legend
Petro is done and mrs petro is going to leave him for the father of her children One Patrick Berglund.....lol butt hurt bleedr theo lol
This is all fabrication by Pietrangelo and the Las Vegas Cheaters. Faking a "retirement" to clear cap room for Marner and everyone with any sense knew it. It was obvious.

Aint really cheap shots. I respect the hell out of Petro. He is in the hall of very very good. I do think the Covid year it was a little short sighted for a leader of the team to not keep himself sharp enough to play hockey. Setting the standard for the team that low was brutal. He was looking out for himself at that point. That is more reflective of what possibly could happen here for Vegas.
In regards to him knowing he's been injured for a while. He is the one that said it. He has played multiple seasons with the possibility of shutting it down apparently and decided not to. One could argue he's been doing that for a while I guess. I wish Petro would have gotten his statue. Could have been a cool story. Greed is a hell of a thing. It worked out for him with multiple cups. There are the Yadi's of the world, and then there are the Petro's.
History revisionists may ultimately some how try to convince a statue for him if the franchise falters and can't come up with a valid statuesque player in the coming decade(s).
But I seriously doubt that. I see multiple players RIGHT NOW more worthy.
He's not a HOF'er. And he's not a statue guy here. He already made that choice.
If he truly led Vegas to a Cup then they can give him a statue.
Everybody out there is talking about it. (not a peep ...do they have statues?)
He and the misses will love the desert and all the greatness of Vegas. He can take his fam downtown Vegas from his desert home for all the reunions. He can join the Vegas traveling alum circus for all the "family" togetherness......a city with zero synergy for hockey.
See....this is where it all falls down for the guy who walked. The big picture he will secretly regret the rest of his life.

Petro thinks of Petro, and everyone else comes in third. That is his choice.
The fact that the 4 nations tournament he skipped out on …… only to be back for Vegas the first game after the tourney. He quit on his country, plain and simple. It’s not the first time he did what he wanted and ignored what was best for the team.
I believe nothing that the clown says. I believe he will be back for the playoffs, I’ve said that from Day 1. If that happens, I hope someone puts him into the 3rd row. Petro is gone….I never missed him. It’s weird that others can’t let go and have gone to lengths of actually making up stories to build him up into someone he is not. Just my opinion.
