Re: Keep Arenado Unless or Until...
If the Cardinals trade Arenado who plays at 3rd? The Cardinals have plenty of guys who can play second (Gorman, Donovan, JJ and Saggese). They don't have anyone who can play 3rd unless JJ can. JJ recently started playing 3rd for the first time since his freshman year of college. It is a big leap to start playing 3rd recently to replacing Arenado in the field. I would keep Arenado. Trade Gorman. Play JJ at 2nd. Move Donovan to left field and have Saggese be a utility player.

I apologize....do you forgive me??Carp4Cy wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 15:59 pmThat mess of words you just posted is why the Cards roster is what it is - a mess. Too many players who either don't have a position, or can kinda play a bunch of places but aren't ideal anywhere. Or they are ideal somewhere but thats the only place so and so can play, so we put them somewhere else. As I see it, A healthy Nado at 3b Isn't the primary problem. He's only playing 1 position, and defensively, he's still excellent at it. Its those other 5 we have to weed thru, and probably move on from a couple to make our roster make sense. After that, we need to find a REAL long term replacement for Nado, not just a piecemeal servicable warm body from a multiple choice list.Cusecards wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 12:54 pmFair viewpoint.ecleme22 wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 12:36 pmFair assumption: Since 2025 happened, if Gorman is brought back in 2026, he won't get the runway.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑23 Sep 2025 10:57 amWell if they want to be dumb then they can bring him back for another tour of sucking at everything. Gorman is a negative WAR player at 3B. Nado isn't. We don't need to move him just to move him and get nothing worthwhile in return just to give Gorman a 5th year of expected zero contribution. Gorman has done nothing to deserve that treatment. Move on from Gorman and then focus on who replaces Nado later. It shouldn't be Gorman as the replacement. Also Gorman would be a lot easier to trade.
I don't believe that it is written that Gorman is the 2026 3B even if NA finds another team.
We'll know in a few months. An infield of Wetherholt, Winn, Donovan and Contreras have as
good a chance as any.
Thoughts on Gorman being on the roster at the beginning of 2026 ST: Who cares. It doesn't mean he will be with the team by June.
To replace Arenado my first choice(taking into account offense and defense) would be Donovan.
Although he could certainly find himself in LF.
Lots of moving parts:
Donovan- IF?OF?
Gorman- 2B?3B?DH?
Herrera- DH?OF?C?(doubtful in my mind!)
JJ- 2B?3B?
Walker- AAA?RF?Traded?
Of course there are others and any could be dealt as well?

Re: Keep Arenado Unless or Until...
The move is to trade NA.
I don't care how impressed we are by his 3b defense, he has been bad the last two years and has two years left on his deal. He doesn't want to be here and it shows when the Cards are losing.
Given the direction the Cards are going, I have no idea why people are advocating keeping him.
Sounds like he wants out. Cool. Bye.

To trade him, we would have to eat his salary, without having a 3B replacement. I think that’s what the objection is to.ecleme22 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2025 08:53 am The move is to trade NA.

The Arenado situation....despite his career resume has been on a steady decline for two years.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Sep 2025 09:03 amTo trade him, we would have to eat his salary, without having a 3B replacement. Big $$ owed
Declining productivity
Age
Now his shoulder?
And the dreaded NTC!
I can understand that for personal reasons(family, etc) he feels more comfortable staying in St. Louis.
But....given the current state/direction of the organization it is best to move on.
Reading the tea leaves, it sounds like that may be about to happen?

2. There is life after Arenado. Surely our organizational depth chart at 3b isn't just one guy.
So maybe we see, like, Prieto there. Who cares????

And if we eat his salary and get no savings to invest elsewhere (or BDW just spends the tiny savings on his grandkids), then there's no point to it. Trading him is just a distraction to fixing even bigger problems in the OF/rotation and his payroll is already a sunk cost.
Now IF we had a true top 3B prospect just waiting in the wings (not a SS/2bman), then its another story, but I don't even know who that would be. No one on MLB's list even looks that close and GG caliber:

Even with him we are down to $75M committed payroll. If BDW isn't going to spend significant $ this year at that starting level, getting down to ~$70M isn't going to make a difference.ecleme22 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2025 12:40 pm“Don’t trade him because they won’t do anything w the money saved!”Carp4Cy wrote: ↑25 Sep 2025 10:00 amI care. Re: Keep Arenado Unless or Until...
JJ or Hurdy Gurdy can man 3B. Nado's defense is really nothing special anymore as he's tied with 5 others at 12-17 in MLB for outs above average, and his hitting is pathetic. Not sure how you can trade him...and I seriously doubt the Cards eat money to get a lotto ticket suspect/prospect in return.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Sep 2025 09:03 amTo trade him, we would have to eat his salary, without having a 3B replacement. Bill has said long ago once the contact is made the money is set aside.
He'd get some of that back even if it is only half.
IMO the guy wants out. Wanted out months ago, just was waiting on a best situation
in his opinion for himself. Drug his feet and ended up going home alone.
They just had a staged walk off of the field to give him one more acknowledgement
to his time in St. Louis. That would not occur if NA wanted to stay. He has the NTC and
is willing to toss it. His life choice that I can respect.

Nothing against Arenado, but it's time to trade him. Hopefully he lands in a good situation. Bloom needs to look to the future. Don't half-(donkey) this and piddle around like jackass Johnny did last winter.
