You don't think the pitchers he faced got up more for facing Ruth than they ever did for any other AB? Those guys were competitors just like the MLB players and any time they got to play against MLB players they absolutely did everything they could to show they were as good or better than them.Quincy Varnish wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 18:19 pmlol… Ruth organized those exhibition games. What's known of Ruth's numbers barnstorming against black teams were that they were even better than his ML numbers. Wonder what kind of success the great "diversity" pitchers of the time would have had with a steady diet of Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Foxx, Hornsby, Speaker and the such.
Bleacher Reports rated Walter Johnson's fastball as the best of all time, Lefty Grove's at #4.

Regarding the false rhetoric that Ruth faced the best the game had to offer… Joe DiMaggio said Satchel Paige was the best and hardest thrower he ever faced. How many times did Ruth face Paige? None.

lol satchel Paige was 11 years younger than Ruth it’s not surprising they didn’t face each other when Ruth hit 50 home runs the first time Paige was only 14. And yes you said they weren’t trying to strike Ruth out meaning they were letting him hit them Ruth hit just as well against them as he did the white players so they were intentionally letting him hit them and hit home runs which cost them some games so yea if what you say is true they were no better than the black Sox scandal throwing games intentionally for money. It’s not my opinion you said they intentionally weren’t trying to strike him out which means they were intentionally letting him hit them which would be why he hit as well against them as he did against white players. Those are your words clown they weren’t trying to get him out because they weren’t trying to strike him out. Jackie Robinson also never faced satchel Paige does that mean he never faced the best pitching? I mean their careers overlapped so I guess Jackie never faced the best pitching either. But you’re the kind of clown that needs the last word so I’ll let you have it and be done with it you’re wrong and you’re disrespecting those players saying they intentionally let him hit themQuincy Varnish wrote: ↑17 Sep 2025 23:21 pmTheir professional careers overlapped for nine years. You are making false assumptions. I suggested the possibility that pitchers might not have been inclined to bite the hand that feeds them in giving Ruth their best stuff. That was within a question I posed to SOMEONE ELSE - not you, as you parade around claiming I jumped into your conversation while wildly misinterpreting everything I’ve said. Go on and regurgitate the same 100-year-old bull[shirt] spouted by Spink and Landis back then - nobody will [fork]ing care, especially not the Nazi apologist whose coattails you’re pathetically riding. We will always love Ruth. Every time I go to Wrigley, I think of him calling his shot. He was a hitter, pitcher, drinker, and ambassador of the game.
Hard to judge talent back then. Would Hornsby hit .400 multiple seasons today? No. Could he have been like a Jeff Kent or George Brett? Maybe.
But in every era, Ohtani is doing what no one else has really ever done. His OPS is 1.006. His WHIP in 13 starts is 1.073. His ERA is 3.29.
It's almost as if Albert Pujols, in his heyday, started 13 games and pitched like Adam Wainwright.
That's nuts.

According to Buck O'Neil Paige did face Ruth in an exhibition at the end of his career and that Ruth hit a monstrous HR to dead centerfield. O'Neil continued that Paige was waiting for Ruth at homeplate with a ball asking for an autograph. The story is backed up by Ruth's daughter Julia.
I'm sure Paige, with his ego, gave his all facing Ruth and probably registered several outs against him too.

Believe what you want but to think any pro ballplayer given the chance to pitch to Ruth would purposely throw him a big meatball is really stretching things.
Again believe what you want.
