Did he have TJ and that's why he missed all of 23? He was phenomenal in 21. Of course, I'd avoid STL like the plague if I were him.
This is where careers go to die.
He also had a surgery to remove bone spurs in his elbow in 2022 before the tommy john surgery. Hes clearly not the same guy since returning in 2024

I see no reason not to pick him up. Go get him Mo/Bloom.
Other than he completely sucks?
There is no good reason to pick up Buehler.
And for those people saying “but this is his first season back from Tommy John”… stop it. The success rate of pitchers coming back from multiple TJ surgeries is abysmal. I gather most of you don’t realize that this was his second go around.
Yeah, 2 TJs is usually 1 too many. Pass.
Ohtahni has had 2 TJs. I would take a chance on him.
Walker Buehler is not the best player on the planet.

Any chance the Cardinals claim Buehler?
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say zero point zero one chance.
They’ve told us a hundred times they’re reducing payroll. What would be the point of taking on the roughly $3MM still owed?

Why aren’t the Sox responsible for all but the pro-rated minimum?

Just reading up - 'claim' implied that he was designated for assignment and not given his outright release. In that scenario, he'd have to clear waivers. Any team who 'claimed' him during that period of time would assume the remainder of the contract.
I didn't realize that he was given his unconditional release, meaning he's free to sign anywhere... so there is no 'claim' process.

If WB passes a physical, then I could see bringing him in for VERY cheap with incentives.
But don't expect much.

Looks like the Phillies claimed him and plan on
putting him in their rotation.

Which suggests the Cards did have a crack at him and let him go?

There was no point for a dead end team to claim him for 24 meaningless games. He and Philly are a good match. Blocking a guy from signing with a playoff contender is bad form, and other vets would take notice.

Next year it will begin to change, I believe.

Buehler is on a one year contract

One year contract does not matter
If he pitches well for ya, sign him for 2026
The bad form part makes no sense
The Cardinals obligation is to build their best team for 2026, not care about what vets think
Nobody cares what they think

If the Cards cut Buehler off from a playoff chance he would probably be too hacked off to sign with them as a FA. Not that we would offer the best combo of money and chance to win, anyway.
