I agree, I was just being as generous as I could to the "Hate Army" crowd. In the end, Petro was almost certainly never going to get everything he wanted from this ownership group. And the Blues were always going to lose a good piece during the expansion process. I did forget just how good the Blues were with Krug that first year...DawgDad wrote: ↑29 Aug 2025 10:24 amGenerally agree with a couple of caveats.Army's Mom wrote: ↑29 Aug 2025 10:05 am What stats?
By % of draft picks who play NHL games, he's at least top third.
By overall win % since he was GM, the Blues are 5th.
By players traded away versus players acquired, he'd more than break even (Bokk and Rundblad turned into Faulk and Tarasenko, he traded Jori Lehtera for Brayden Schenn, Berglund, Sobotka, and Tage Thompson for Ryan O'Reilly, etc.). The only players of value he traded away were Thompson, Tarasenko, and Mikkola - Tage got us a Cup, and Tarasenko and Mikkola weren't re-signing.
You can argue he overplayed his hand on Petro and compounded that mistake by overpaying Krug. I'd agree. But that's one mistake, complicated by the COVID flat cap years.
You can argue he got too cute with the expansion draft. I'd agree in hindsight. At the time, though, I thought it was the right move.
Even if I concede he effed up Petro and the expansion draft, he's still a Top 5 GM leaguewide over the past 15 years, and easily better than anyone else in Blues history.
On Petro, in the end it was the player's decision to walk away from a proposed deal. He had that right.
On the expansion draft, Army got cornered by a combination of the rules and Schwartz. The Blues were destined to lose a valuable asset in the draft, but should have only been one. The circumstances of the Schwartz signing made it appear to be a double-whammy, that would not have seemed quite so bad or unfair if Schwartz had signed with a different team.
On Krug, in fairness Army built a 109 point team in 21-22 and Krug was a part of that. How many Blues teams have matched or bettered 109 points, or scored 300 goals? Krug was beset by injuries and by perception he wasn't what the Blues really needed, and overpaid at that. When healthy he wasn't dragging the team down but he "came up short" defensively and to the eye test.

Re: Army's report card from the assylum members
The thing about the 21-22 season is the team had regressed to being an average defensive team. Pietrangelo leaving coupled with the reality of what Krug was bringing (with Husso and Sideburns covering for Binner in the regular season) left many disappointed, or aware of the defensive slippage. Actually, Krug was plus-23 in 64 games, but Perron and company garnered the credit (much deserved).Army's Mom wrote: ↑29 Aug 2025 14:18 pmI agree, I was just being as generous as I could to the "Hate Army" crowd. Of course that team was beating everyone's brains in offensively, and come playoff time the playoff Binner showed up. Until . . .

Where was Noel Picard when they needed him?
Let's face it, Army brought some great hockey and many memorable moments. He deserves the ac blades, but I'll be glad when the focus is back on the team on the ice.

Here's fsome stats/facts
2010-2015
Blues were 4 in wins with 259.
From 2016-2020
Blues were 6 in wins with 226
From 2021-2025
Blues were 15 in wins with 200.
The more the Blues traded, signed, and picked up Army's squad. The more we lost.
He was given a team that was at top of the league.

Re: Army's report card from the assylum members
Great thread idea. I agree: A-
His only lasting blemish concerns his vision of the defensive corps after winning the Stanley Cup. The decision to go with smaller players who were supposed to be better puck movers (Faulk, Krug) was a hot disaster. He let his ego get the best of him with Alex Pietrangelo, although it takes two to tango so Petro is equally to blame. And fate played into it when Jay Bouwmeester was forced into retirement and the endless chase to replace him unfolded.
Otherwise he assembled a top flight organization identifying and securing top flight coaches and a scouting staff that continues to unearth good to great players regardless of their draft position. He had the balls to be daring in signing Broberg and Holloway and is now leaving his role with the Blues on the precipice of what could be their most exciting window in decades.
How can a real Blues fan not be forever pleased? It's been a helluva fun ride!

Army has been a great GM for the Blues. There is a Cup and a grading thread in this forum recently wherein the vast majority of posters agree. Not arguing this further, I've posted my thoughts on the matter and you cannot change them.
Re: Army's report card from the assylum members
Army has had some ups and downs. Contracts might be a weakness but trades and the restricted move has me on the positive side.
Re: Army's report card from the assylum members
Looks like we've got a poster here who is upset they weren't invited to one of Army's BBQs!
