If I understand it correctly, Brown is not a mechanics guy. The Cardinals need someone who understands mechanics.

What players have made a significant improvement in hitting over last year? How many and who?
Gorman is better than he was a year ago.
but worse than 3 years ago. We can't pretend he's at the top of his ability.

and Walkers chase rate has to be better than it was.. baby steps
Does it?

2025 Chase: 32.9%
2024 Chase: 32.4%

2025 Whiff: 35.1%
2024 Whiff: 31.6%

2025 K: 31.6%
2024 K: 28.6%

You can check these numbers you know before guessing (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-p ... itting-mlb)
I actually watch the games thx... and the low outside slider appears to be chased less than it had been
The change that you might be seeing is since July 18th. That will have limited affect on STAT's.
He was basically the same as it ever was before then.
I think he is chasing the absurd off the plate less. The ones over in the other batters box.
He MIGHT be in a better spot, needs confidence in the changes which takes both time and production.
Needs more balance and improved recognition. He's got a way to go.
definitely needs better recognition .. and a better idea going into the batters box would be nice as well
You know, that's the part I don't understand. I know that it is SOOO hard to hit at the major league level, so the physical part I understand. I get maybe lunging, missing, or being late- but the being lost I don't understand. If you've heard Walker speak, he is very smart, he cares, and by all accounts he puts the work in. All that being true, it just seems like he would be further along with pitch recognition and a plan. He may have a plan, but he often looks lost.
He knows better than us the challenges he has had.

Partially a lack of confidence or trust in the changes would be among my top guesses.

It's hard to get worse than his 87 wRC+ last year, given his poor defense and baserunning.
But his 103 wRC+ is worse than the two years before (118 and 105 wRC+) -- again, with poor defense and baserunning.
He's career -4 DRS at 3b and -11 DRS. And he is 465th in Sprint Speed in MLB.

I get it that he is disappointing, the nature of the question is- is the hitting coach helping?

My point was that he had a different batting coach the past three years and two of the years were better offensively. So no, I don't think Brown has done much for him.

3dender wrote: 21 Aug 2025 12:04 pm Is it me or has there been an increase this year, especially the last month or so, of multiple Cards players just watching a fastball down the middle for strike 3? Contreras, Walker, and Nootbaar have been frequent offenders.

Not blaming Brant Brown for that necessarily, but it seems like a notable aberration from previous years.
Not just you 3d

This team takes way too many meatballs right down the middle of the plate.
When some guy is throwing 97 MPH heaters and spinning the slower pitches every-which-way, it's easy to be fooled.
They take a lot of first pitch strikes down the middle as well.
