Not sure that I know what you mean by fewer resources.

A few losing seasons doesn't explain everything.
How long before they could turn into the Indians or Brewers?

I find it hard to believe that the dEwitts would want it this way.
Because I'd think there'd be a correlation of team market value to perception/performance.
This is the reason he hired Bloom. He has extensive experience how to stretch the dollar being the GM of the Rays for so long. I think DeWitt is going to keep the payroll in the $120 million range for awhile. His big contracts haven't always played out very well.

On a side note, I was just looking at the population figures for US Cities and of all the cities in the US with populations over 100,000, St. Louis was #2 in % of population lost since 2020. Only Jackson MS had a higher population % loss. St. Louis has lost 7.26% of their population since 2020. Down from 301,578 to 279.665. Now, I know that the Cardinals are a regional franchise and that is just the numbers for the city of St. Louis, but either way it doesn't bode well that the city is losing people hand over fist.

Correct i misspoke slightly there, he was the SVP of Baseball Operations. So he knows the ins and outs of how a small market payroll needs to be stretched.

It matters not if I am concerned. They ARE a small market team if measured by market size and being in the bottom 33%.

I think ownership is a lot smarter than many on this forum. I think they recognize a looming massive change in MLB starting with the next contract negotiation. The health of the game demands some major changes to keep small market teams relevant and it won't come easy. Expect no baseball perhaps for an entire year. Players not being paid for the year and teams losing money will finally come to their senses and meet in the middle providing a little bit more parity. Maybe.

But STL is smart in that they have few contracts on the card and can come out of a new CBA contract with a clean slate and revamped farm. Yeah, this year and next might suck but 2027 is when it all kicks into gear if I read them right. And if they can negotiate a contract for that season.

They're absolutely now a small market time and behaving like one. The national brand of the Cardinals has been dying. They had the opportunity to not let that happen, but ownership lacked the vision to stop the slide.

They brought in leadership guys who came up through Tampa and Cleveland.

Anyone who doesn't see that writing is lying to themselves.
Some on here contest they always were a small market team?
I disagree with that.
They used to be baseball royalty.
But instead have wilted like a thin weed.
Once a great franchise, now a shadow of their former selves.
The sad thing is like you said they've conceded.
Given up.
Bunch of friggin cowards if you ask me.

The biggest problem is that Mo-ran, the pompous, smug jerk should have been fired before the season...get some new blood in the organization..I'm part of a season tickets group in Section 148....and fans are (upset) and staying away!
