He's got all the tools.
Best Cardinals prospect ever?
When he gets 3,631 hits in a Cardinals uniform he will be the best prospect ever - and Musial did that while missing 2 seasons due to military service.

Best Cardinals prospect ever?
JD Drew and Rick Ankiel

I’d put Oscar Taveras 3rd
matt morris worked out pretty well.. and lankford.. and coleman.. and herr.. pretty good history of prospects here..
Right, but the question was best ever, and I think that’s easily Drew and Ankiel

best prospect? or best prospect that had the best career?
Best prospect. Highest regarded / drafted / rated. I’m talking about guys who were in the conversation as best college player, best school player, top of the draft, then highly ranked.

Hence my easy 1 and 2 of Drew and Ankiel.

Someone else mentioned Simmons. He predates me by a good margin and really all the ratings services, but he’d have to be up there I guess.

So what you’re talking about is someone’s opinion of what a kid who’s about to be drafted looks like. Not really production, stats, play in the minors……
Has anyone ever rated these modern rating services? That would be an interesting read

There is no planet in which Walker was ever regarded like Drew or Ankiel.

BA and MLB did both have Walker at 4th pre-2023 and BP was 2. FWIW I thought that was WAY too high.

Ankiel was 2 at 19 and 1 at 20.

I’m not sure what you’re suggesting.

Are you saying that you don’t think Drew and Ankiel deserved to be thought of as they were?

If so, why?

If no, what are you arguing?

colemn stole a lot of bases when that was in vogue but he was actually awful...660 OPS...poor outfielder no power..low OBP..his career WAR was 12

ramfandan wrote: 13 Jul 2025 04:50 am Baseball America compiled a list of Superlatives : Best Tools & Players in yesterday's Futures Game performances
The categories were : Best Player, Best Hitter, Power, Best Batting Practice , Best Defensive Player among pitching categories too.

JJ was their selection for BEST POWER

Their analysis was :
Best Power: JJ Wetherholt, SS, Cardinals

Wetherholt just missed a homer in the opening at-bat for the NL squad, instead putting it off the center field wall at 105.9 mph. He hit a second ball 102.4 mph on a lineout. Wetherholt was the only player in this year’s Futures Game with multiple balls in play above 100 mph.
There are already 7-8 players from his draft class in the majors. Nick Kurtz has more HRs than anyone on our team. So this just means JJW is next up, though he's not necessarily better than Nick or Jac, especially with the power bat.

I’m attempting to determine what you define as a prospect? From your responses it appears your entire view of a prospect is the value these “experts” put on the player before they ever perform as a pro.
JJ has been performing as a Pro which I believe was the posters origination point for asking “Who was cards best prospect” not who had all the “bloviating experts” falling all over themselves before the player ever put on a minor league uni.
If as you claim, Pujols was qualified as a prospect…..how is he not the best modern prospect to ever be in the Cards organization?

A prospect is basically any player in the minors. How does yours differ?
JJ has been performing as a Pro which I believe was the posters origination point for asking “Who was cards best prospect” not who had all the “bloviating experts” falling all over themselves before the player ever put on a minor league uni.
So how does Drew or Ankiel NOT qualify as a prospect to you?

This is so weird.
If as you claim, Pujols was qualified as a prospect…..how is he not the best modern prospect to ever be in the Cards organization?
Because he wasn’t nearly as highly regarded as Drew or Ankiel. Why is this difficult?

Because people want to play stupid by acting like they don't understand what the question is so that they can ruin the thread.
