I don't understand why they changed the rotation to maximize his starts before the ASG, but didn't do the same to get him at least one start against the Cubs (who they just played 7 games in a two week span).
Because Marmol is incompetent.
^^^THIS^^^
Managerial Malpractice not to have set up his rotation weeks in advance where Gray would face the scrubbies.
To throw the scrubs BOTH Mikolas & Fedde, yet another blackmark to add to his resume of incompetency and why he has to be fired at seasons end.
Sonny gets a start every 5 days and the team has won 9 of his last 11 starts. All wins have the same value. Sure, we'd love to have him beat the Cubbies. Mikolas and Fedde could just as easily lose to Pittsburgh, the Guardians etc. There is nothing set in stone about competition with the Cubbies. The June 18 rain out screwed with Sonny's starts.
No they really don't have "the same value" huge.
A win vs the scrubs guarantees you shave a game off their lead.
A win vs the Nats while the scrubs are winning too equals a push and game off the schedule.
This was yet another managerial screw up by Oli, showing his incompetency yet again and why he's unqualified to be a ML manager.
Go back and figure out what the June 18th rainout did to Sonny's start plan. It's impossible to stick to a plan screwed by Mother Nature. Do you postpone starts to ensure that he meets the Cubbies? Bull chit. Every win is important. You take them when you can.
Our problem isn't saving Sonny for Cubbie games; our problem is not having enough starters who can guarantee us a good start.
Nothing is impossible unless we decide it is................
Oli could've easily scheduled Gray to face the scrubbies, acting like it takes a Phd in Physics to do so is inane.
I showed you why your statement was wrong.
A win vs the scrubs is way more valuable than a win vs the Nats.
A competent Manager would've adjusted his rotation weeks out so it happened.
A bullpen game.................a Matz start..........recalling McGreevy for a start......easy as pie.

They should have held back Gray one game and had him pitch vs the Cubs on July 4th. It would have given him an extra couple days of rest following a historically great performance. Instead Mikolas set a great tone for the Cubs series, for the Cubs. And having both him and Fedde start 2 of the 3 games was a recipe for disaster.

No argument about the recipe for disaster, but, that's 40% of our rotation.

It shouldn’t take that long, only 6 bullpens in baseball have thrown less innings than ours and 4 of those are in the AL. Sad if one bullpen game ruins them that much.

I will unsay anything I've said about those stupid pitch counts and the babying of pitchers in the modern game. Still, I suspect this had a lot to do with some unique factors in this game, one being the disrupted and uncertain warm-up prior to the game. Perhaps this is one time it made sense to take him out after 5 though still pitching well.

70 pitches? That guy is soft for a supposed ace.
As I pointed out in the GDT, Gray was sweating heavily from the first ending on.
He had warmed up twice.
And then he threw 70 pitches in that soup.
And you’re giving him cra# about this? You have no idea what that is like…

So the options are pitch Gray on the 2nd, 8th, and 13th
Or the 4th and the 9th?
How is is not better to get three starts out of him if possible?

Because anti Oli trolls are gonna troll! Notice how the Game Day Thread is shorter on days the team wins. They couldn't wait to jump on Oli last night after taking out Gray but lo and behold, he asked to be taken out. That had to really disappoint the anti Oli club.

Because it would help to pitch your best against the team (your rival), youre chasing. Instead of conceding the series with Mikolas and Fedde?

Do you know how hard it is to set up a rotation marchup 4-5 weeks ahead of time? And then be able to stick to it? Marmol is playing with the hand he was dealt. You dont skip starts because you want a certain matchup in 3-4 weeks.
