Devers has some warts. Seems like a bit of a jerk, but the Red Sox paid him to be their third baseman and franchise player then asked him to move positions (yes I know the defensive metrics are bad). He also seems like the sort of player that may not age well. That being said, he's still pretty young and can still rake. After seeing the new contract Vlad Guerrero signed, the Devers contract doesn't look that bad. Just wait till we see what Kyle Tucker gets paid.Whatashame wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:28 pmscoutyjones2 wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:19 pmHave you seen Devers contract?Whatashame wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:15 pm Not knowing everyone involved, the Giants have to be ecstatic about acquiring Devers and getting out from under the contract to Hicks.![]()
Yeah I’ve seen it. Not knowing Devers as a person, there is a boatload of production for the money. Maybe he’s a d••• and maybe he isn’t but he can hit.
The Giants signed Hicks last year to a 4/44 deal and honestly didn’t know what to do with him. His ERA is over 6.00. His WHIP is almost 1.60. He has an ERA+ of 59. They had no place to use him.

I would take Devers and his warts all day long. Especially for what they had to give up. Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison?? I’m not sure that Matz and McGreevy aren’t a better pitching combination. The Giants #4 prospect and another pitching prospect which I didn’t see in the Giants top 20.
The Devers contract, which might have seemed big at the time has been passed several times since and Devers is only 28. Where will Devers play? It won’t be 3B. He will play 1B or DH for the Giants and will hit a ton in SF. A player like Devers is exactly what the Cardinals could use.

Re: Devers to Giants
I understand completely, but that's better than a lot of the huge contracts. Devers made his debut pretty young.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 20:12 pmHe will be 29 this year and paid thru age 36lordoffatness wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 20:08 pmDevers has some warts. Here are some of the huge contracts (I understand some of these players are much better, but there aren't a lot of these huge contracts to compare):
Guerrero: age 39 season
Ohtani: age 38
Soto: age 41
Judge: age 39
Lindor: age 37
Stanton: 37ish (yanks will probably buyout)
Trout: age 38
Betts: age 39
Freeman: age 37
Chapman: age 37
Olson: age 36ish
Seager: age 37
Semien: age 37
Rendon: age 36
Some are much better....Tatis, Acuna, Julio Rodriguez, etc
Tucker is the same age as Devers and may sign a 10+ year contract for probably $200 million more than what Devers is getting

That's a lot of money.Cusecards wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:17 pm Wow!
Sox had obviously had enough of Devers and his act.
A little surprised Giants took on that contract with a player that seems to have some issues?
Then again they may feel they have to roll the dice a bit seeing as they are up against the Dodgers and Padres?
Devers owed $255M. Time will tell.
I wonder if the SOX are picking up any part of Devers salary?
ANyone got the details?

Maybe Giants underpaid in talent because they were willing to take on the contract??

Re: Devers to Giants
In addition to Hicks, the Red Sox got back some prospects (Harrison and Tibbs), and apparently sent 20 or 30 million back to the Giants to complete the deal. So The SOX got rid of a player they didn't want anymore, saved a lot of money, and got back at least one decent prospect.Cusecards wrote: ↑16 Jun 2025 08:37 amHaven’t seen any.Red Bird Classic wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 22:48 pmThat's a lot of money.Cusecards wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:17 pm Wow!

So not a complete salary dump, but mainly that.

Dam. N. The players. It is all their fault. It couldn’t be the fault of those who evaluate the talent? Remember when Moe told the world a relief pitcher he signed in the offseason (whose name escapes me) was going to be our closer, only to find out later his arm had fallen off? Those players are all to blame.WLTFE wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:13 pmBut...but....DeTwit and Mo-ran have done everything to win...the players are at fault!desertrat23 wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:10 pm I love it when teams try to win.

Dude, you got to pay for good players which unfortunately the Cardinals never do. They are in the bottom tier of the league when it comes to largest contracts ever. Goldschmidt contract was the biggest one ever.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:19 pmHave you seen Devers contract?Whatashame wrote: ↑15 Jun 2025 18:15 pm Not knowing everyone involved, the Giants have to be ecstatic about acquiring Devers and getting out from under the contract to Hicks.![]()
