I always felt BDWJr would want C. Bloom making the decisions around the trading deadline since this will be his team going forward.
Made no sense to have Mo, other than in an advisory role, making future roster decisions that would affect the team after 2025.
Smart move handing the reins to Bloom earlier rather than waiting for seasons end.![]()

Re: Bloom taking over sooner than some think
What's lazy is the constant criticism of Mo's overall career. Yes it has moved the wrong direction these past few seasons but it is laughable when people say that Mo had nothing to do with the 2011 team or the subsequent successful teams. He was head of scouting when they drafted Pujols and Molina, and was instrumental in suggesting Chris Carpenter to be signed despite injury and was the main proponent of getting Adam Wainright in a trade. He was assistant GM and in charge of player development in the system in the mid 2000s.
Before he took over the scoutingvarea it's pretty easy to count the Cardinals prospects that had an impact on the team, or any team for that matter. He later developed the system of sustainable talent wanted by the owner, which bore fruit on these 2009 to 2015 teams. He scouted and signed Ryan Ludwick off the scrap heap who helped get us into the playoffs, and traded a nothing prospect for several years of a good Matt holiday and added players like Berkman and Beltran and a host of pitchers as needed to build good clubs.
So many important players on the 2011 team were either scouted, developed, or signed under Mozeliak that's it's laughable that people say he deserves no credit for that championship. And his team played and lost another WS in 2013 against the Red Sox just like Jocketty/LaRusss did in 2004. But I am proud of that team as rookies and young players dominated the pitching staff. I think they overachieved that year.
Yes the trend is down the last part of his Cardinal career and he will have to wear that, but underhis watch it looks like we have a decent crop of young players to build on.
I also have Mo fatigue but the hate and disrespect he gets on here are pretty lame. Larussa was great but to give him all the credit is silly, since he didn't win as much either with lesser players in the first few years of his tenure and 2007. He didnt devlop the players he properly used them. And Mo isnt the only Gzm to shy from powerful managers in the last few years, most teams do.
Mo and Jocketty have similar winning percentages and they each were in charge for a championships and league title. Mo deserves more respect for his body of work.

Re: Bloom taking over sooner than some think
Good post, Bob. Sure the Cards have had several down years because of the backward movement of Goldy, Arenado, Walker, and Gorman, but some fans forget that the 4 full seasons before that the Cards won 93, 91, 90, and 88 games. The fact that the players didn’t win playoff games those seasons is on them.Bob Kunush wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 17:10 pm What's lazy is the constant criticism of Mo's overall career. To say nothing of the fact that the regular season isn't what matters, how can you say Walker and Gorman went "backward?" They're prospects that didn't pan out. Blaming failure on them is a bit much.Cranny wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 17:42 pmGood post, Bob.
