Maybe Mercer as 3C to supplant Sunny? But that’d really only be a consideration if Army can’t find a bigger fish to fill the 2C role to push Schenn into Sunny’s 3C spot.
The main thing on their roster that sticks out to me is they have 4 right-shooting d-men. That’s quite rare and those are valuable and a hot commodity and I could see NJ taking advantage of the market on RDs. They have Hamilton, Pesce, Casey and Nemec on the right side.
Nemec would be the obvious one to go for but he’s struggled a bit to gain a hold in the NHL. Then again, maybe all he needs is a change of scenery and a kick in the pants being traded would likely bring. But as a former 2nd overall pick, the luster on him has worn off a bit so NJ would likely have to take a little less for him than they’d likely want. Probably similar to the deal Minnesota did to get David Jiricek.
The other young guy is Casey. Seamus is a talented kid. I recall liking him when he played for the NTDP and at Michigan. But he’s only 5’10” and that brings obvious limitations as a d-man.
Nemec would be the home run swing. Acquiring a guy you’d hope could regain his standing as a future #1 and become a star like many thought he could when he was drafted 2nd overall. Casey would be an add to shore up the 3rd pairing. Someone you know is better than Matt Kessel. A decent guy to have for a while to fill a spot until you found a better option.
I want no part of Meier’s contract - 6 more years at 8.8M.
Assuming that Nemec and Seamus are ready to be full time NHL'ers, that actually gives the Devils 5 RHD.
Right side:
Hamilton at 9 for 3 more years.
Pesce at 5.5 for 5 more years.
Kovacevic at 4 for 5 more years.
Nemec's entry deal expires after next season.
Casey's entry deal is up in 2 years.
On the left side:
Luke Hughes will get a nice raise this summer.
Dillon at 4 for 2 more years.
Siegenthaler at 3.4 for 3 more years.
Most of their 8 NHL d-men have good to great size.
New Jersey definitely will try to trade one of those RHD.
Their phone will be ringing off the hook because of the lack of supply of RHD.
I actually think they should trade Hamilton. Losing his salary coupled with Dillon's deal expiring the same year as Q. Hughes deal expires would give the Devils the cap space to sign Q. Hughes.
New Jersey also is set with their top 2 centers so in theory they already have the 2 toughest positions to fill.
They need two 2nd line wingers which are typically in abundance.
With just a few medium sized moves and a healthy roster next spring, the Devils will be one of the favorites in the east.
What are you willing to give up for Nemec?
Like something close to the David Jiricek trade.
I'd probably lead with a 1st and 3rd round pick(in different years) plus Jiricek.
Their window is open and they desperately need top 6 winger help. There's a big drop off in talent after Bratt and Meier.
Noesen had an outlier year, but at best he's a 3rd liner. Same goes for Palat, Cotter, and Haula.
Markstrom is 35 and will be entering the last year of his contract.
The Devils have won 1 playoff round in the last 13 years. Fitzgerald wants immediate help.
Nemec was disgruntled with his extensive stay in the minors and is the obvious trading chip for NJ.
You have to give to get.
The Blues have plenty of NHL ready wingers:
Kyrou
Holloway
Buchnevich
Bolduc
Snuggerud
Neighbours
From the small sample size Snuggy looks like a top 6 winger very soon if not now.
Bolduc might be the key. If the Blues brass feels he is a top 6 winger that would open the possibility of trading Kyrou or Buchnevich. That would leave STL with Holloway, Snuggerud, Bolduc, and whoever they don't trade as their top 2 line wingers.
Neighbours is an ideal 3rd liner.
If Nemec develops that would give us the elusive young RHD that would balance out the LHD we have in the pipeline.
It appears Lindstein will be an NHL d-man. Hopefully we hit on 2 out of 3 in Fischer, Burns, and Ralph.
Assuming Broberg is re-signed and continues to develop we would be set on the port side for years.
Of course the dream is also for Jiricek to stay healthy and develop into a top 4 RHD.
Assuming your pro scouts say Nemec still checks most of the boxes and just needs a change of scenery that's the move guys.
He could play with Leddy on the 3rd pair for a year while Parayko and Faulk do most of the heavy lifting for another year on the right side.
Fowler-Parayko
Broberg-Faulk
Leddy-Nemec
Tucker
I haven't done a deep dive on the Devils cap situation but I'm guessing if they would take on Buchnevich (or Kyrou) that a salary dump player would be included with Nemec in the return.
All of this fun speculation doesn't include the ubiquitous NMC's..........

The Devils might really value Hofer IMO. As you said, Markstrom is 35. Their backup is Jake Allen, who is 34 and a pending UFA. They have 19 yr old Mikhail Yegorov that just played his freshman season at BU. He has very high potential IMO but but he’s a ways away. I could see them really valuing Hofer. Would that be enough to get Nemec? Probably not but the Blues could add something to their side of the ledger. But not a big something IMO.TheHighHat wrote: ↑11 May 2025 11:49 amIt's very doubtful that New Jersey wants prospects and/or picks as the return in any trades they make this summer.kimzey59 wrote: ↑11 May 2025 10:00 amI'd give up a LOT for Nemec.TheHighHat wrote: ↑10 May 2025 12:06 pmDon't forget about Kovacevic. Losing Hofer would hurt but I’d guess they would then sign a vet journeyman and then that vet will battle Ellis for the backup role. Winner gets the NHL backup role, loser gets the AHL starter role. But either way, both would probably go up and down as it’d be good for Ellis to get some NHL starts even if the journeyman vet beats him out initially.

Back then the Kings had Doughty, Roy, Durzi, Spence, and 2 prospects named Brock Faber & Brandt Clarke.
The Kings needed forward help so they traded the unproven Faber and a first rounder to Minnesota for Kevin Fiala.
Fast forward 3 years: Faber is a stud and Rob Blake lost his job as GM of the Kings.
I would definitely roll the dice and trade Buch for Nemec.

Even with 2 very good centers, New Jersey was only 20th in goals per game.
Who knows, maybe Fitz makes multiple moves this summer.

Yeah, like most teams, they’re more than 1 player away and would truly need to make multiple moves to be a contender. You make a good point in that they could definitely use help on the wing. I doubt they’d be looking for a high priced one though so that’d likely take out Buch and Kyrou. But idk. Obviously not as familiar with their situation regarding the cap and future assets as the Blues.TheHighHat wrote: ↑11 May 2025 13:37 pmWhile I agree with your take on their goaltending situation, I just feel the Devils most glaring need is at wing.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑11 May 2025 13:14 pmThe Devils might really value Hofer IMO.
Even with 2 very good centers, New Jersey was only 20th in goals per game.
Who knows, maybe Fitz makes multiple moves this summer.

I just want to say that anyone whose username is "The High Hat" (and I've been looking for an excuse to mention this) is aces in my book.
It's a question of ethics.
Don't smart me! See I wanna watch you squirm; I wanna see you sweat a little, and when you smart me... it ruins it.
I am a person working on a film criticism book. Not for the book but just personally I'm saying Miller's Crossing (1990) is pretty much my favorite film.

The year (1990) MC was released was the year of the gangster movie.seattleblue wrote: ↑11 May 2025 19:28 pm I just want to say that anyone whose username is "The High Hat" (and I've been looking for an excuse to mention this) is aces in my book.

Goodfellas, The Godfather 3, State of Grace, and The Kray's. There might be another one I'm forgetting.
Saw Goodfellas on opening night. September was the month if memory serves.
G3 opened on Christmas Day. I was there for that opening as well. Recall a little bit of snow on the ground.
I have never seen The Kray's. I have seen State of Grace.
Haven't been to the theatre since the late 90's
Back on topic:
I see Mr. Nemec has his own thread now.
I agree with your comment about the value of Nemec and Kyrou flipping dramatically in the last year +.
