This is gonna sound weird. Late ‘50s-early ‘60s, when this happened duting a game, “hotbox.” When we played with two fielders and one runner, it was “runner-up.” It must have been a Ferguson thing.
Liven in Spanish Lake and we called it run-ups.

Hotbox is definitely preferable to coldbox.

HorseTrader wrote: ↑29 Apr 2025 15:05 pmAnyone ever play a tourney where you went to bat with a 3 ball 2 strike count, foul ball was considered strike 3. If I remember each team batted through 3 outs, cleared the bases, did 3 more and 3 more.
I played in plenty of "one-pitch" leagues in the winter in Austin in the 90's. Played regular 3-out innings before switching to defense though. 45-min timed games. Might have been double-headers. Really kept the game moving during the cooler weather for Texans freaked out by anything below 60°.
Makes sense, they called it a Texas tournament in Missouri.

I believe you are correct, now that I think more about it. Thank you.
P.S. It broke my heart when Ponticello’s closed.

late 50s and throughout the 60s it was a hotbox. When we were playing in the back yard with 3 to 6 people, we rotated to develop better defensive skills.

There is no doubt.
Went there for the last time in 2011.
When I was in outside sales coming home from across the Chain of Rocks bridge I would stop for one of those salads.
The dinner salads they had there were the best.

Mid 60's in HS. Hotbox was the drill. Pickle was the in game situation. Our coach had played for SF Giants and was fanatical about fundamentals.
Hotbox: 2 bases, 2 defenders, 1 runner. Runner had to stay active to the count of 12. Would yell random statements at defenders then runner in attempt to break their concentration. The statement that always got someone, was your girlfriend has great legs or great body. Defenders had to tag out the runner by count of 10. Those who did not meet the limits ran the bleachers. There was always players running the bleachers.
Learned a ton - how to run in defenders throwing lanes, how to run at defender to attempt getting an interference, how both defenders reacted on each throw, etc. Honestly can't remember if anyone got into a pickle during a game - so practice probably worked.

I was in North Carolina 80/90s. Always called it a pickle.
Hotboxing wasn’t a term I used until I got to college. Had nothing to do with baseball.

I grew up in Florisant/Ferguson in the early 60s. I have heard the term hotbox but more so pickle. And if all we had was 3 guys to play we would do that for hours.
