On this date in 1935, as he accepted the NL MVP trophy from the previous season, Dizzy Dean apologized to the crowd at Sportsman's Park. Why? Because a few days earlier, after pitching nine innings in a win over the Braves, Dizzy was late to an exhibition in Springfield that same night and kept the governor waiting. If you were to create a Mount Rushmore of Cardinals pitchers, Dizzy Dean and Bob Gibson would almost certainly be included. On this date in 1974, Gibson recorded his 3,000th career strikeout the same day that Dizzy passed away ...
