As you recall Svanson was GREAT last season and turned awful this season.
Yes, relievers tend to go good one year and bad to terrible the next. Svanson has been a classic case. Still has good stuff, but location is often terrible.

If the Cards trade away DMay, JoJo, and Stanek, we will likely see an even more bare pitching cupboard.

Yes, Jo Jo being out has cost a couple games, they will have to bring up guys from Memphis who may or may not be good. The ones who may help are now starting games, do not know if they want to switch them to the pen. It will be interesting to see what they do to finish the season if they trade all of the above. And I think they will.

Gastelum is going to be fine. 2027 will be much better.

He was the best reliever in all of the minor leagues for much of this season.

I said he would struggle initially in the majors...and he's taking his lumps.

Instant Gratification must make it hard to be a fan for some of you.

He's here for a long while. And he'll be fine.

Actually the Cards have had decent history picking up relievers over the years.
Soriano has been good!
Bruihl? Meh
Stanek? Up and down
Work to do for sure. Thank God Roycroft is gone! 😳

That guy Roycroft might have had the worst control of anyone I have seen get that many chances. Glad he is gone.

Yep and even if he doesn't get there, they need to see what they have in him against major league hitting.

So...are you saying that stuff doesn’t matter if you have NO idea where it is going??

Yes. And I will add that a guy with control like Greg Maddux would have a hard time with the challenge system for balls and strikes. His success was in part that he rarely threw strikes and would expand his zone as the game got late.

Yep, covering innings will be the critical front office calculus for the remainder of 2026. I am guessing we will see Mathews and Mautz and several more.

No, the cupboard is not bare. There are a lot of candidates in the pipeline. Not all will make the cut, but the only way we'll know if they can make the cut is by sticking them into situations where they have to sink or swim. And we can expect a learning curve on top of that.

As a fan it behooves us to be patient with the process or go find something else to do, else we drive ourselves mad.

I also agree with this take of the situation. I think after the trade deadline we're going to start seeing some more guys hitting the starting rotation and a lot more riding the Memphis and maybe even Springfield train back and forth to see who can come to the show and not blow games. Guys will get their chance and either they meet the moment or they go back down and work on what went wrong. I really think that's going to be the second half theme.
