I like Chief but I don't think he is suited for a full season of announcing. A once a week or once in a while deal like TNT would be good. He was entertaining when he did that.

His contract most likely stipulated that Toronto make good on the full value regardless. So if he got another coaching gig or did TV that paid him less the Leafs would be obligated to cover the difference. That's pretty common with coach contracts these days given how volatile the job can be.

Not sure if hindsight is needed it was a risky job to take on that franchise I wish he had not taken it then and still now.

it did and it didn't Why was he hired? to try and get improved playoff results out of a team that was deemed "flashy" or "soft". 2 years before chief was hired, they were 7th in regular season scoring and got to the 2nd round for the first time in forever playing a total of 11 playoff games. 1 year before chief was hired they were 2nd in regular season scoring and lost in the first round in 7 games. They hire chief to try and get them over the hump. They are 7th in regular season scoring and lose in the 2nd round playing a total of 13 games. Technically this is their best finish in the longest time.

This year, they trade away one of their best players, their C gets hurt, and they fail to make playoffs. Not only that, they took the C off of an existing captain and put it on matthews before Chief got there. I don't see how the leafs fans can sit there and say this is all chiefs fault and his system stinks. I can go down the reasons I disagree with chief and "system" because I don't think he particularly is an X's and O's guy and lets his assistants handle that. But this is an organizational failure.

All of that said, if you are going to hire a new GM, it's probably best to hire a new coach. I also would be trying to trade away their core. Anything that is a remnant of the past Leafs teams is going to continue to linger because Leafs media won't let things die.

Yeah it's definitely not entirely his fault or anything. I think it was a bad fit from the start. His style is getting everybody on the bench to buy in and play a straight forward 200 foot game. Toronto was loaded with finesse offensive players who were probably better suited to a more technical coach who could exploit their offense more. It worked with Berube for a bit, particularly when they brought in the prototypical Chief player in ROR, but eventually the mix just stopped working. Losing Marner for effectively scraps was probably the end of the line for their core group IMO. I honestly don't know where they go now. McKenna will help cover for Marner obviously, but they still have massive holes on that roster.

Well, rumor mill is hot over at TSN, with Kris Knobloch expected to be fired by the Oilers by day's end and Bruce Cassidy replacing him. Lots of moving parts in the next few days.

Wonder if the "delay" in Knobloch's firing means they've reached out to Chief?
